Widely-regarded as the finest shot putter in Wagner’s all-time track & field history, Josh Russell was a dominant four-year performer for the Seahawks. Russell was an NCAA qualifier and participant in the shot put in both 2003 and 2004 seasons, winning the event at the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships and the IC4A Championships. For his efforts, he was named the 2004 Indoor Performer of the Year. He remains the Wagner record-holder to this day, in both the outdoor shot put [18.21m (59'9"]), and indoor shot put [17.76m (58' 2"), both set in 2004. The Neptune, NJ native remains the all-Time NEC record-holder in the outdoor shot. “There’s no doubt that Josh Russell was the greatest thrower in Wagner history and it’s not even close,” said his coach Joe Stasi. “He had a commanding presence about him when he competed and was a powerful, athletic, and driven individual.” At *6'1", 270 pounds, Russell also competed on the Seahawk football team in 2001, and again in 2004, while he concentrated on his shot put career in-between. On the 2004 squad, he was a starter on the defensive line where he was credited with 26 tackles, including 17 solo stops .
