Wagner College Sports Performance
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
The mission of the Strength and Conditioning Department, as well as the Strength and Conditioning Staff, is to provide a well-designed, collaborative training program based on sound physiological principles. Training that develops individual sport demands, through the use of experimentally proven methods, in a safe and productive environment is the primary emphasis of the department. Our goal is to provide the student-athlete with the best hands-on strength and conditioning program while staying committed to the principles of ethical conduct, integrity, and excellence.
At Wagner College, the Strength and Conditioning Staff is responsible for everything that falls under the umbrella of “physical preparedness”, but not including any sport specific technique (ex: how to serve in tennis or mechanics of a baseball pitcher). The staff’s time with the student-athletes will be focused on helping them reach their physical and genetic potential, in turn, allowing the athlete to perform in their sport more efficiently, with more intensity, and for longer durations. The staff will physically, and mentally, progress the student athletes through a science-backed program as safely and efficiently as possible, in order to ensure the athlete’s physical preparedness to perform in their sport.
The staff’s best interest in every session is the success of that team, and more importantly, the people that make up that team. If there is ever a reason to consult with a strength coach, as it relates to training or even as someone to have a conversation with, please stop in or communicate (in-person, email, text) with that strength coach and they will make themselves available to meet, schedule permitting. If there is anything that needs to be brought to the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance’s attention, please reach out to: christopher.cordova@wagner.edu and a meeting will be set or a conversation will be had as soon as possible.
NUTRITION
There is not currently a sports nutritionist on staff to prescribe meal plans, but the strength and conditioning staff will be able to make suggestions and inform student athletes on good food decision making skills. The strength and conditioning staff will also be able to provide various resources in terms of athletic nutrition. Also, be on the lookout for nutrition related graphics and posters in the Spiro weight room as well as near the Fueling Station.
The Fueling Station will be available throughout the week in Spiro Hall for student-athletes to grab a quick healthy snack while on the way to/from practice or lift, or even between classes. The items in the fueling station are meant to supplement, not replace, the athlete’s meals to ensure athlete’s are consuming enough calories to promote strength gains and recovery. Fueling station items include, but not limited to, chocolate milk, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and granola bars.
For any other health and wellness related questions, please reach out to the Health and Wellness center on campus.
