Howard “Bones” Thompkins played three years of basketball at Wagner after transferring from Northeastern. Thompkins made an immediate impact as a sophomore in 1978-1979, helping the Seahawks improve their win total by 14 games en route to a 21-7 record, a victory over Nationally-ranked Alabama and a trip to the 1978-1979 NIT while serving as the center. He finished his three years with 1,236 points and 779 rebounds, while posting averages of 16.3 ppg and 10.7 rpg. Both of those averages continue to rank among the Wagner career leaders. A two-time All Metro Second Team selection and a back-to-back ECAC Metro First Team selection he ranked eleventh in the nation in rebounds as a senior. After his final campaign, Thompkins was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the ninth round of the 1981 NBA draft. He and his wife Marsha have two children.
