Hall of Fame
Joe Murphy enters the Wagner Hall of Fame after a stellar three-year career for the Wagner Baseball program in the 1980s. Murphy played for the Green & White from 1983-1985 before being selected by the Chicago Cubs in the seventh round with the 182nd pick of the 1985 Major League Baseball Draft. He holds the distinction of being the highest drafted player in school history, by six picks (Andrew Bailey 188th pick; Oakland 2006), and was drafted 17 rounds ahead of future Cubs star Mark Grace. A three-time First Team All-Conference selection and a New York Division I All-Star, Murphy concluded his career with a .380 average, which is still the top-mark in school history. He also recorded 28 home runs, 106 hits, 97 RBI and 68 walks while helping the Green & White to 34 wins. The power-hitting first baseman owned the Wagner single-season home run record for 25 years, walloping an impressive 12 long balls in just 26 games during 1984, and also hit a career-high .407 in 1985 and .387 in 1983. A commodities trader he and his wife Rosemary have twin daughters; Kristin and Lauren.
