Baseball Gears Up For Weekend Series At Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, PA - The Wagner College baseball team heads down to the City of Brotherly Love this weekend as the Seahawks will take on the University of Pennsylvania Quakers in a three-game series at Meiklejohn Stadium.  

All three games are set to be streamed on ESPN+. 

Wagner enters the weekend looking for back-to-back wins after snapping a nine-game losing streak with a 19-11 road triumph over Fordham on Wednesday afternoon. The Quakers, winners of five of their last six, will look to continue their winning ways after picking up an 11-5 victory at home over Monmouth.

All-Time Series With Pennsylvania:
The last meeting between the two teams came in 1978 with Pennsylvania winning 21-0. All-time, Wagner is 11-28 against members of the Ivy League with their last meeting coming against Yale back on March 8, 2009, a 16-3 victory for the Green & White. 

Soaring Seahawks:
  • Wagner produced a season-high 19 runs on 11 hits in Wednesday's victory over the Fordham University Rams. Three Seahawks had multi-hit performances, led by fifth-year Mike Ruggiero, who went 3 for 4 with a career-high four runs scored. 

Strong Schedule:
  • Through March 15, Wagner is ranked eighth in the nation in strength of schedule as the Seahawks have played No. 4 Vanderbilt of the SEC, USC of the Pac-12, and Rutgers of the Big Ten all within the last two weeks. 

Long Ball:
  • The Green & White connected on a season-high four home runs against Fordham, with Dante Faicchio, Mike Ruggiero, David Melfi and Mateo Matthews leaving the yard. Over the last nine seasons, the four home runs against the Rams are tied for the fourth-most, as the Seahawks also hit four home runs in a game back in 2018. In 2021, 2017 and 2016, the team clubbed five round trippers. 

Scouting Pennsylvania:
  • The Quakers are 8-5 overall on the season and 1-0 at Meiklejohn Stadium. Wyatt Henseler leads the team with a .438 batting average to go along with five home runs and 16 RBI in 13 games this season. Jackson Appel and Tommy Courtney have combined to steal 7 of 8 bases this year. 
  • On the mound, Owen Coady leads the Quakers with a 2-0 record and is one of four pitchers to not allow an earned run thus far. 
  • Collectively, Pennsylvania is batting .272 with 73 runs scored and have produced 66 RBI. The pitchers for Penn have tossed 106.2 innings while recording 114 strikeouts, led by Coady's 21, while yielding 64 walks.

  • The Seahawks will conclude their road swing on Wednesday, March 23 with a visit to Big East members, St. John's.
