BOX SCORE
Emmitsburg, MD - Mount St. Mary's scored 12 runs as all nine starters contributed to a 17-hit attack in dominating Wagner 12-2 in first of a four-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series at Straw Family Stadium. With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 8-12 and 4-1 in the NEC while the Seahawks fall to 7-10 and 4-1 in the NEC.
The Green & White had their chances but went 1-for-7 (.143) with runners in scoring position while the Mount was 6-of-18 (.333).
Tommy Flynn led off the the game for Mount St. Mary's with his second home run of the year. The Mountaineers added two more runs on consecutive RBI doubles from Kyle Kane and reigning NEC Player of the Year Shane Eyler, taking the early 3-0 lead.
Senior
Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) got the Green & White on the board in the top of the second inning with his NEC-leading seventh home run of the year, a solo blast to left center that cleared the wall by at least 70 feet while extending his team-best hitting streak to 11 games.
The Mount added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Zach Foster RBI double and a Mike Matta RBI fielder's choice, pushing the lead out to 5-1.
Wagner got one of the runs back in the top of the fifth inning on freshman
Gaby Ramirez's (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) second home run of the year, a solo shot to left field. The Seahawks had a chance to add to the damage as junior
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) and senior
Damian Csakai (Freehold Township, NJ / Freehold Township) each drew two-out walks, but the rally would go for naught as Mount St. Mary's starter RHP Costa Kapothanasis induced an inning-ending pop out.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Elyer immediately got that run back on a first-pitch home run that just cleared the right field fence, pushing the lead out to 6-2, before Josh Winter became the ninth Mountaineer starter to record a hit, with a double to left center. Reliever LHP
Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) issued a walk to the first batter he faced and Zach Helman delivered a three-run home run that barely cleared the fence in left center, making it 9-2.
Last year in game one, Wagner rallied from a 9-2 game one deficit to win 11-9, but this year the Seahawks wouldn't be as fortunate.
The Green & White had a chance to dent the lead in the top of the seventh and top of the eighth innings as the first two Seahawks in each frame reached safely. However, each rally was cut short by Mount double plays.
Mount St. Mary's added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Jacob Darr fielder's choice, before Winter added a two-run double, providing the final 12-2 tally.
Csakai notched his fourth multi-hit game of the year, going 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a walk while sophomore
Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame) went 2-for-2 with double.
Kane and Foster each notched three hits, leading a 17-hit attack for the Mountaineers.
Kapothanasis (1-3) picked up his first win of the year, striking out three while yielding two runs on seven hits and two walks. Sophomore RHP
Ryan Van Spronsen (Brantford, Ontario / Assumption College) fell to 1-3, surrendering seven runs on 12 hits and one walk with three strikeouts over 4.0 innings.
The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 12:00 pm.
