Men’s Lacrosse Hosts Fairfield In Season Opener

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's lacrosse team will begin the 2023 season at Hameline Field on Saturday when they welcome Fairfield at 1:00 pm.

Brendan Higgins Earns Preseason Recognition
Senior Brendan Higgins was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Team, the conference announced on February 1.
 
Higgins started all 12 games last season for the Seahawks, scoring two goals tallying one assist. The Troy, MI native led the team with 13 caused turnovers and was second with 28 ground balls on his way to earning Northeast Conference (NEC) Second Team honors.

Leadership
Head coach Bill McCutcheon announced the three captains for the 2023 season as graduate students Tommy Scarpello and CJ Sweitzer along with senior Eli Fisher taking leadership responsibilities.

Scarpello and Fisher were the lone captains on the 2022 Seahawks. Scarpello has appeared in 33 games as a Seahawk while getting the starting nod 28 times. He started all 12 games for Wagner last season while scooping 15 ground balls and causing 11 turnovers. The Tabernacle, NJ native played a pivotal role in a 2022 defense that was tied for the fewest goals against in the country last season with 121.
 
Eli Fisher returns as a captain after starting 11 out of 12 games last season and scoring three goals. The Allentown, PA native has made 26 appearances while logging 23 starts. Fisher has 45 career ground balls and 11 career caused turnovers.

CJ Sweitzer has been named one of the captains of the Seahawks as a transfer from Bryant. The Hatfield, PA native played in 11 games at Bryant while scoring two goals.

New Faces
The Seahawks have added 18 new players for the 2023 season. The team added 15 freshmen and three transfers for its first season in the MAAC.

The transfers include Xander Baugess from Hofstra, Jack Matuszewski from Connecticut College and CJ Sweitzer from Bryant.

The freshmen include Chase Alber, Athan Barmer, Smith Callaghan, Joe DeRiso, Max Frissora, Isaac Grossberg, Nico Kross, Oliver Leedale-Brown, Tristian McMahon, Jake Mitchell, Drew Pemrick, Myles Pratt, Vincent Santella, Diesel Schraufnagel and Rudy Zarate.

Welcome Back
Wagner returns 22 players who saw field action last season, including 11 players who made at least 10 starts.

Wagner returns three players who scored at least five goals last season in graduate student Jack Brady, senior Benjamin Stewart and sophomore Patrick Caldwell.

Wagner also returns four players who tallied 20 or more ground balls in Brendan Higgins, seniors Danny Brady and Eli Fisher and sophomore Quin Hoke.

New Beginnings
Along with Sacred Heart and LIU, Wagner will embark on its first season in the MAAC after being in the NEC.

Welcoming these three NEC schools in the MAAC will be Manhattan, Quinnipiac, Siena, VMI, Canisius, Marist and Mount St. Mary's. Mount St. Mary's was also in the NEC last season.

The Schedule
The Green & White will take place in five non-conference contests with two at Hameline Field before beginning conference play on March 11 at Marist. Wagner's first home conference contest will be March 18 against Quinnipiac.
 

Wagner will wrap up the regular season on April 22 against Manhattan at Hameline Field before the MAAC tournament begins on April 29.

Recapping 2022
Wagner had three players earn All-NEC honors last season in Brendan Higgins, Danny Brady and Quin Hoke. Higgins and Brady earned Second Team honors while Hoke was named to the Rookie Team.
 
Higgins started all 12 games last season for the Seahawks, scoring two goals tallying one assist. The Troy, MI native led the team with 13 caused turnovers and was second with 28 ground balls.

Brady started all 12 games in goal for Wagner last season, accumulating 169 saves while leading the NEC with a .591 save percentage and 14.08 saves per game. Brady was tabbed to the Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Team of the Week on March 16, 2022. Brady alco notched a career-high 26 -save performance against Bryant last season.

Hoke appeared in all 12 games last season for Wagner while picking up 21 ground balls, tied for fourth on the team. Hoke also caused eight turnovers last season.

Record Book Watch
Danny Brady ranks fifth all-time in program history with 375 saves, he trails former Seahawk Chris Gerlach (2000-03) by 15 saves. Brady recorded his 300th career save last season on April 9 against Hobart.
 
Brendan Higgins ranks ninth in career caused turnovers with 27, he trails former Seahawk Colin Shaw (2010-11) by five.

New Year, New Uniforms
For the 2023 season, the Seahawks will debut white home uniforms. After wearing gray home uniforms last season, the Seahawks have brought in the white home uniforms with green letters and numbers.
 
The uniforms will also have white shorts as opposed to the green shorts worn last season.

Danny Brady Goes international
In June, Danny Brady had the opportunity to try out for the U21 Ireland National Team due to his stellar junior season on Grymes Hill.

Following his tryout at Rutgers in June, Brady received word from the coaches that they wanted him play in the team's National Team training camp.

Brady anchored a defense last season that was ranked tied for 10th nationally in goals against average and was tied for the fewest goals allowed in the nation with 121.

About Fairfield
The Stags will head to Hameline Field with a 0-1 record after falling to Lehigh 20-10 on February 11.

Fairfield was picked sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) preseason poll as Braden Lynch was named preseason All-CAA and Jack McKenna was tabbed as an Honorable Mention.

What's Next
Wagner will travel to West Point, NY to take on Army on Tuesday, February 21 at 3:00 pm.
