LEXINGTON, Va. — The Wagner men's lacrosse team fell to VMI on Saturday, by the score of 13-6. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to fifth place in the NEC standings.
The Keydets opened the scoring in the first 30 seconds, but Wagner responded quickly with a goal from senior midfielder
Jake Mitchell. After VMI scored another pair of goals, junior defenseman
Terry Farrell found the back of the net late, and the first period ended with the Seahawks trailing 3-2.
VMI scored three unanswered goals between the second and third periods before the Seahawks responded with a man-up goal from junior attacker
Ryan Rossi. The two teams each traded a pair of goals into, before the Keydets went on another scoring run and took a 12-5 lead. Freshman attacker
Dylan Popehn stopped the bleeding, before the home team scored one more time with less than a minute to go. The 13-6 final score prevented Wagner from clinching a spot in the NEC Tournament.
Popehn scored the last three goals for the Seahawks, earning his third hat trick of the season. His 20 goals and 25 points are both second most on the team behind his teammate Mitchell (24/36).
Wagner will have a chance to clinch a spot in the NEC Tournament with a win and a VMI loss in the final game of the season.
The Seahawks will play that final game of the season against Robert Morris at Hameline Field on Saturday, April 25 for the team's annual Senior Day. The game will start at 12 p.m. and will air on NEC Front Row.
