Baseball Concludes 2022 Regular Season With Three Games At Bryant

Smithfield, RI - The Wagner baseball team concludes the 2022 regular season with a three-game series at Bryant that is set to begin on Thursday, May 19 at 3:00 p.m. 

Friday's contest will also start at 3:00 p.m. while Saturday's finale is slated for 1:00 p.m. 

FOR SATURDAY'S CONTEST AT BRYANT...
  • Seahawk fans planning to make the trip to Bryant, per Bryant University Athletics, will need to be on campus before the Bulldogs' Commencement Ceremony ending sometime between 12:00-12:30 p.m... The graduation exercise is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

  • Fans may only park in DESIGNATED SPACES ONLY and should not park on the SHOULDER of any roadway to keep clear for emergency vehicles.

Last Time Out...
  • Playing a true home contest for the first time in nearly three years, the Wagner baseball team earned a 7-4 come-from-behind victory over St. John's on Tuesday afternoon at SIUH Community Park, the home of the Staten Island FerryHawks. 
  • Before the start of the contest, the Seahawks recognized its 2022 Senior Class - Josh Casado, John LaPointe, Brandon Demma, and Quinn Mimnaugh
  • Ruben Del Castillo worked 2.1 scoreless frames in relief of Nick DeCarlo to pick up the win. John LaPointe threw a scoreless seventh in recording his first save of the season and sixth of his career.
    • For the Staten Island, NY native, he moves into a tie for seventh on the all-time career saves list with former Seahawks' Kevin Wiseman (2018-21) and Ian Karlsson (2008-10), who finished their tenures with six saves. 
  • Cody Bey was the lone Seahawk on the day with a multi-hit performance, going 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Maimu Kobayashi went 1 for 2 while plating home a pair of RBIs as did pinch-hitter Brandon Glowacki, who tied the game in the bottom of the fourth before Kobayashi gave Wagner the lead.

NEC Championship Watch...
  • Wagner remains in the tournament hunt. The Seahawks are two games back in the loss column to FDU with three final conference games set to begin on Thursday.
  • Merrimack remains ineligible for the postseason due to NCAA Reclassification regulations. 

All-Time Against Bryant...
  • The Seahawks and Bulldogs have met 50 times in program history with Bryant holding a 35-15 edge in the head-to-head series. 
  • This week's regular-season finale in Smithfield marks the final time these two programs will be NEC opponents, as Bryant is set to join the America East.
  • Wagner is just 3-7 over their last ten meeting with Bryant as the Bulldogs took two of three from the Seahawks a season ago in Lakewood, NJ. 
  • The Green & White's last win in Smithfield came on April 3, a 4-1 triumph in the series finale. 




Seahawk Tidbits... 
  • Selby leads the team with a 21-game on-base streak. Kobayashi is next with 13 straight followed by Mike Ruggiero with 12. 
  • Faicchio and Kobayashi pace the ballclub with 15 multi-hit games with Selby close by with 13. 
  • Faicchio ranks second in the NEC in RBIs (48) and tied for second with 11 home runs. He is among the league leaders in slugging (.567 | 6th) and doubles (15 | 4th).
    • The 48 RBIs by Faicchio move him into a tie for fourth on the Wagner single-season list, as he joins Vin Avella (2009) and Gil Barkman (1999). 
  • The 11 home runs move him into a tie on the single-season list for fifth with Barkman (1999) and John Spinelli (1999).
    • On the all-time career home run list, the Laguna Beach, CA native is now tied with Kevin McDonnell (2007-11) for 17th all-time with 11 home runs. 
  • Kobayashi is among the top-ten in the conference in runs scored with 40 and has been hit by a pitch 17 times this season, tying for the most with FDU's George Rosales. 
  • The Kitaku, Nayoga, Japan native matches former Seahawk speedster, Damian Csakai, for 22nd on the single-season list, as he scored 40 runs back in 2008.
    • Next on the list is former Seahawks, Sean Mazzio and Ben Ruta (2015), who each scored 41 runs.  
  • Kobayashi's 17 HBP moves the junior outfielder into a tie for second on the single-season list with Csakai, who was hit 17 times in 2010.
    • The single-season record is 19, held by former Seahawk first baseman, Tommy Mazurkiewicz, back in 2014. 
  • Ruggiero enters with 122 career hits in 153 career games.
    • The Smithtown, NY native moved up 50th on the all-time career hits list
    • Additionally, Ruggiero has drawn 62 career walks, which moves the veteran Seahawk infielder into the top-20 on the career walks list with former Seahawk and current Staten Island Ferryhawk outfielder, Ben Ruta (2013-16). 
  • Freshman right-hander Frankie Wright was named NEC Rookie of the Week on Tuesday afternoon after earning his sixth of the season in the series opener against Mount St. Mary's on Friday. 
    • The Egg Harbor Township, NJ native moves into a tie for 14th on the single-season wins list, joining Danny Marsh (2017), Austin Goeke (2016 & 2017), Paul Mammino (2013) and Mike McTamney (2005).
    • Wright also moves into a tie for ninth on the single-season games started list, joining the likes of Marsh (2017), Goeke (2016), current Triple-A right-hander, Mike Adams (2016), Matt Morris (2014), Ryan Casey (2013 & 2014), Joe Testa (2008), Andrew Bailey (2004), and Mike Forthofer (1999). 
  • Wagner reliever, Nick LePre, enters the weekend with 62 career appearances, as the Staten Island native recently surpassed former Seahawk hurler and current Lehigh Valley IronPig reliever, Mike Adams, who finished with 61 from 2013-16. 
  • Over the last ten games, Selby has powered the team, batting .400 (14 for 35) while producing four doubles. 
  • Mike Ruggiero has collected a team-high 15 hits over his last ten games with four doubles, tying Selby. 
    • Selby and Cody Bey and Ruggiero have each collected 14 hits over the last ten games with Ruggiero clubbing two home runs and driving in nine RBIs. 
  • Dante Faicchio has clubbed three home runs and driven in 12 RBIs over his last ten games.

About Bryant...

  • Entering the final weekend of the 2022 season, the Bulldogs sport a 25-24 overall record and 15-9 in the league, which is currently second to LIU, who sits atop of the NEC standings at 16-8. 
  • Bryant dropped its final non-conference game of the 2022 season, a 9-2 decision to No. 16 UConn on Tuesday afternoon. 
  • The Bulldogs were limited to just four hits as Matt Woods, Jake Gustin, Carmine Petosa and pinch-hitter John Tuccillo each had a base hit with Alex Lane and Derek Smith driving in the only runs for the home team. 
  • Woods paces the conference in average (.397), slugging percentage (.665) and is third in on-base percentage (.463). His 71 hits are the most in the league thus far.
  • He also ranks ninth in runs scored (37), eighth in RBIs (37), tied for first in doubles (17), and first in triples (5).
  • Alex Lane paces the circuit with 12 home runs while ranking ninth in average (.327), second in slugging (.630), third in RBI (47).
