Baseball Opens Homestand With Mount St. Mary's This Weekend

Lakewood, NJ - The Wagner baseball team closes out their season series with Mount St. Mary's this weekend as the Seahawks and Mountaineers will embark on a three-game set from ShoreTown Ballpark. 


Last Time Out...
  • The Green & White dropped the series finale at Central Connecticut on Sunday, 9-1. 
  • Lukas Torres led the way for the visitors going 2 for 4 on the afternoon while Cody Bey, Mike Ruggiero and Dante Faicchio each had a hit.
    • Bey drove in the lone RBI for the Seahawks.

NEC Championship Watch...
  • Wagner remains in the tournament hunt but will need to make up a three-game deficit with six to go as the Seahawks are chasing Bryant and FDU, each with records of 12-9. 

All-Time Against Mount St. Mary's...
  • Wagner and Mount St. Mary's have face one another 113 times in program history with the Seahawks holding a 66-47 overall record. 
  • The Mountaineers took two of three back in April with the Seahawks taking the opener, 16-6. 
    • In the three-game series back in April, the Green & White batted a collective .282 while outscoring the Mount, 18-16.
    • The Seahawks connected on six home runs, two of which coming from Griffin Selby and Dante Faicchio while Maimu Kobayashi and Henry Martinez connected added a roundtripper. 
    • For the series, Wagner slugged .505 while also drawing 16 walks. 
    • On the mound, the Seahawks posted a combined 3.96 ERA while recording 29 strikeouts and allowing a total of 13 walks for a 2.23 to 1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. 
Seahawk Tidbits... 
  • Selby leads the team with a 17-game on-base streak. Kobayashi is next with nine straight followed by Mike Ruggiero with eight. 
  • Faicchio and Kobayashi pace the ballclub with 13 multi-hit games with Selby close by with 12. 
  • Faicchio ranks third in the NEC in RBIs (42) and fourth in home runs (10). He is among the league leaders in slugging (.551 | 8th) and doubles (13 | 4th).
    • The 42 RBIs by Faicchio are tied for 11th on the Wagner single-season list, as he joins Phil Capra (2017), John Spinelli (2000) and John VonAhnen (1985).
      • His next RBI will move him into the top-ten, as he will join Spinelli, who drove in 43 back in 1999. 
    • The 10 home runs move him into a tie on the single-season list for seventh with former Seahawk sluggers Vin Avella (2008), Chris Dick (2002 & 2003) and Dave Noriega (1987)
      • The next home run from the Laguna Beach, CA native will propel him into a fifth-place tie with Gil Barkman (1999) and Spinelli (1999), who each clubbed 11 that season. 
      • The 10 home runs thus far in his Seahawk tenure are tied for 18th all-time, joining Nick Mascelli (2014-18), Chris Smith (2012-14) and Matt Mastrianni (2005-07). 
  • Faicchio is among the league leaders in slugging percentage (5th | .548), hits (9th | 46), RBIs (4th | 38), doubles (T5 | 12), and home runs (3rd | 9). 
  • Kobayashi is among the top-ten in the conference in runs scored with 36 and has been hit by a pitch 15 times this season, second most to FDU's George Rosales. 
    • With four more score, Kobayashi will tie former Seahawk speedster, Damian Csakai for 22nd on the single-season list, as he scored 40 runs back in 2008. 
    • Kobayashi's 15 HBP is currently tied for the third-most in a single-season with Eddie Brown (2011) and Jack Scholz (1993), as each were hit 15 times. 
      • The single-season record is 19, held by former Seahawk first baseman, Tommy Mazurkiewicz, back in 2014. 
  • Ruggiero enters play with 114 career hits in 148 career games.
    • The Smithtown, NY native is currently in a tie with Kevin Rugg (1997-00) for 55th on the all-time career hits list. 
    • Additionally, Ruggiero has drawn 62 career walks, which moves the veteran Seahawk infielder into the top-20 on the career walks list with former Seahawk and current Staten Island Ferryhawk outfielder, Ben Ruta (2013-16). 
  • On the bump, Merkel and Frankie Wright enter 12 starts apiece.
    • The next start for each will move them into ninth on the single-season list, tying nine former Wagner arms. 
      • The last to reach 13 was Danny Marsh back in 2017.
  • Wagner reliever, Nick LePre, enters the weekend with 62 career appearances, as the Staten Island native recently surpassed former Seahawk hurler and current Lehigh Valley IronPig reliever, Mike Adams, who finished with 61 from 2013-16. 
  • Over the last ten games, Selby has powered the team, batting a robust .455 (15 for 33) with a team-high seven runs scores, seven doubles, while slugging .758 and posting a .581 on-base percentage. 
    • Bey has recorded a .351 batting average over his last ten games (13 for 37) while going a perfect 4 of 4 in stolen base chances. 
    • Faicchio and Ruggiero have clubbed two runs apiece over the last ten games with Faicchio leading the team with nine RBIs over the last ten.

About Mount St. Mary's...
  • The Mountaineers, who will face the Seahawks for the final time as members of the NEC, are looking to bounce back after being swept by Sacred Heart over their three-game road series, falling in Sunday's doubleheader 14-12 and 9-5 in the nightcap. The Mountaineers dropped the opener 12-5. 
  • Tristan McAlister leads the team with a .316 batting average. 
  • Thomas Bramley, who is next at .310, is tied with Bryant's Alex Lane and Central Connecticut's Noah Martinez for the league lead in home runs with 11 while ranking among the top in the league in slugging at .575, fifth in on-base at .454 while ranking fourth in runs scored (39) and tenth in RBIs with 33. 
  • On the mound, Cooper Adams leads the team with three wins while ranking seventh in the conference in opposing batting average (.282) and while also pacing the team with 54 strikeouts.

On Deck For Wagner...
  • The final home game of the 2022 regular season is set for Tuesday, May 17, as Wagner will host the St. John's University Red Storm
  • Tuesday's game will be Wagner's first one back on Staten Island as first-pitch from the home of the Staten Island Ferryhawks, Staten Island University Hospital / Northwell Health "Community Park," is set for 3:30 p.m. 
  • Tuesday will also be Wagner's Senior Day, as prior to first-pitch, the Seahawks will honor its 2022 Senior Class.
