Baseball Heads To Seton Hall On Wednesday Afternoon

South Orange, NJ - The Wagner baseball team returns to the field on Wednesday afternoon as the Seahawks will take on Big East members, Seton Hall, in a midweek contest at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field.


Last Time Out...
  • The Green & White completed their first homestand and Northeast Conference (NEC) series of the 2022 campaign, as the Seahawks played host to the defending league champions, Central Connecticut State, in Lakewood, NJ at ShoreTown Ballpark in Lakewood, NJ. 
  • The Seahawks took the series opener, 5-1, on Friday afternoon, as the win marked the first home and league win for bench boss, Craig Noto.
  • The pitching duo of Frankie Wright and Jake Toporek limited the Blue Devils to just one run on five hist as Wright threw five scoreless innings with a career-high six strikeouts to earn his first collegiate win. 
  • Toporek hurled the final four innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out two to record the save. 
  • Wagner jumped out to an early lead in game two of the series, but the Blue Devils erupted for 11 runs over the third and fourth innings and withstood a comeback in holding on for a 14-9 win. 
  • Dante Faicchio and Mike Ruggiero each had multi-hit games for the Seahawks, with Faicchio going 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and Ruggiero going 2 for 3, with one of the two hits going for his team-leading fifth home run of the season. 
  • In the rubber match of the series, Wagner trailed 2-1 until the fifth when CCSU scored six times in preserving an 8-3 series win on Sunday afternoon.
  • Wagner's top-three hitters in the lineup, Maimu Kobayashi, Ruggiero, and Faicchio went a combined 3 for 12 with two runs scored and an RBI. 
  • AJ Vigliotti, who made his Seahawk debut behind the plate, notched his first career double. 
  • The relief trio of Jagger Duquette, John LaPointe, and Eric Crouse, worked the final five innings, allowing just two runs on a combined five hits while striking out three batters, as Crouse recorded a pair of strikeouts.  


All-Time Against Seton Hall...
  • Wednesday's contest marks the 42nd time in program history these two schools will meet, with the Pirates holding a 33-8 edge in the head-to-head series. 
  • The last time these two clubs met was back during the 2019 campaign, as Wagner dropped an 11-7 decision at home to SHU while falling 10-0 at Monmouth four days later. 
  • Wagner's last win over Seton Hall came on April 4, 2018, a 4-2 road triumph. 
  • Former Seahawk Kyle Cala had three of the Green & White's five hits in the contest while driving in two of the four runs. Sean Mazzio and Phil Capra went 1 for 3 with a run scored. 
  • Mike Pirrotta made his first collegiate start in the contest, allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out three in picking up his first career win. 


Seahawk Tidbits... 
  • Ruggiero and Faicchio rank among the top ten in the NEC this season in slugging percentage, as Ruggiero has posted a team-leading .563, good for fifth in the league, while Faicchio is at .531, which places him eighth in the league. 
    • The duo is also among the league leaders in home runs, as Ruggiero is tied with CCSU's Noah Martinez with five, good for a second while Faicchio is in a six-way tie for fourth with four round-trippers. 
  • Maimu Kobayashi is tied for second in runs scored (18) with Joan Sosa of FDU while placing sixth in on-base percentage at .430.
    • He enters the game on Wednesday on a seven-game hit streak.
    • He, along with Faicchio, and Ruggiero has reached base safely in nine straight contests. 
  • Faicchio leads the Seahawks with 24 hits (fourth in the NEC), RBIs with 18 (tied for third in the conference), and doubles with seven (third overall).
  • Wagner is 2-8 in their last ten games, with Faicchio leading the way with a robust .385 batting average (15 for 39). 
    • He has driven in a team-high 13 RBIs over the last ten games.
    • Kobayashi has scored a team-leading 11 runs over the last ten games while stealing two bases. 
    • Collectively, the Seahawks are 12 of 16 on stolen base attempts in their last ten with Faicchio swiping 3 of 4.
  • Wagner ranks 14th in the nation in Toughest Schedule as their past opponents have put up a combined record of 241-141 (.631)

  • The Pirates sport a 3-18 overall record before taking Monmouth on March 29. 
  • Seton Hall took two out of three against Saint Joseph's this past weekend. 
  • The Pirates fell to the Hawks, 3-2, in 11 innings to open Saturday's doubleheader. 
    • Pat D'Amico led the way with three hits and drove in the lone RBI for The Hall.
  • In the nightcap, the Pirates broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth with three runs while holding off a late comeback by Saint Joseph's, posting a 5-3 win. 
    • Zack Sylvester and Collin Sheehan each had two hits with Sylvester driving in two of the three RBIs in the contest. 
  • In the series finale, the Hall scored five runs over the first three innings while adding a pair of scores in the fifth and seventh in taking a 9-4 triumph. 
    • Sylvester led the way with three hits while Sheehan drove in three RBIs and Steve Grober and Murray added a pair of RBIs.

  • Wagner opens the month of April with Northeast Conference (NEC) action, as they will head to Emmitsburg, MD for a three-game set against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers (April 1-3).
