Three Double-Doubles Not Enough As Men’s Basketball Drops 86-76 Decision At CCSU

New Britain, CT – Three Seahawks finished with double-digit points and rebounds on the afternoon, but it wasn't enough, as Central Connecticut earned an 86-76 victory over the Wagner College men's basketball team on Saturday.

Graduate student Curtis Cobb III led the Seahawks once again, scoring 21 points in his fifth 20-point performance of the season. Junior Elijah Ford added 16 points and 16 rebounds in his third consecutive start, while graduate student Patrick Szpir and junior Alex Morales contributed 10 points as well as 10 and 11 rebounds, respectively.

In a game that featured nine lead changes and four ties, the Blue Devils jumped out to an early lead midway through the first half. The Seahawks battled back and a layup by Ford with 1:34 remaining capped off a 14-0 Wagner run to give the Green and White a 34-29 lead.

After another layup by Morales, Wagner took a 36-31 lead into the halftime locker room.

The Blue Devils went on a fast 6-0 run to take a 37-36 lead after a break, but a basket by junior Will Martinez and Szpir layup made it 47-44 in favor of Wagner with 14:56 to play, which proved to be the Seahawks' final lead of the contest.

Wagner rallied, as four straight Ford points got the Green and White within two points at 74-72 with 2:15 to play, but timely shooting by the Blue Devils put the game away and gave CCSU its first win in Northeast Conference (NEC) play this season.

The Seahawks dominated the glass all afternoon, holding a 51-37 rebounding advantage, but CCSU used a 41-11 advantage in bench points and 11 threes to earn the victory.

Next up, Wagner returns home to the Spiro Sports Center, as the Seahawks host Fairleigh Dickinson at 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 30.
