Summary

Biography

Szpir, a 6-9, 230-pound forward/center, who played three seasons at Chicago State University of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), joined the Seahawk program in August, 2019 and will compete as a graduate student for the Seahawks this coming season in his one year of eligibility.

A native of Wheeling, IL, where he starred at Wheeling High School, Szpir (pronounced Spear) brings 83 games of collegiate experience with him from Chicago State where he was also a top student, having graduated in three years. For his career, Szpir scored 239 points for the Cougars while grabbing 221 rebounds (2.9 points, 2.7 rebounds). He finished his junior season with a flourish, recording career highs with 15 points and six assists during a 34-minute stint vs. Utah Valley.

He corralled a career high eight rebounds on three occasions as a freshman in 2016-17, vs. Utah Valley, Missouri-Kansas City and Grand Canyon. In high school, as a three-year letterwinner for Wheeling HS, he averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds per game while recording nine double-doubles during his senior season. Szpir competed in the annual City-Suburban All-Star Game and received All-Area Honorable Mention accolades from the Daily Herald, in addition to being named to the All-Tournament team at the 2015 Battle at the Ridge Tournament.

"I'm thrilled with the addition of Patrick Szpir to our program. He is a veteran player with more than 80 Division I games under his belt for a Chicago State team that plays in a very competitive conference," said Mason, who enters his seventh season as Seahawk head coach in 2019-2020.

"It's always nice when you can add an experienced big body and I'm confident that Patrick will help to bolster our front court as a graduate student this coming season," Mason added. "Having earned an undergraduate degree in just three years, he's obviously an intelligent young man who, on the court, possesses a high basketball I.Q. as well."
