Brooklyn, NY -  The Wagner baseball team opens up Northeast Conference (NEC) play with a three-game series against the Bryant University Bulldogs at MCU Park, the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Class A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Mets and member of the New York-Penn League.
SCHEDULE ALERT:
  • Due to the recent weather conditions, this series was originally scheduled to be a three-game series (three single games) at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George on Staten Island but has now been moved to MCU Park.
  • Following Saturday's series opener, the remaining two games will be played on Sunday, March 25 as a doubleheader (both nine innings), with game one to for 1:00 p.m.

ALL-TIME SERIES:
  • Wagner and Bryant have met 36 times in program history with the all-time series favoring the Bulldogs 26-9. The last time these two squads met was in the 2017 Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Anthony Pecora delivered the game-winning, walk-off two-run single as Wagner eliminated the defending league champions and No. 1 seed, Bryant, 6-5.

LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER:
  • The Wagner baseball team extended its winning streak to seven straight with an 8-4 victory over Big East member, Villanova, on Sunday afternoon. Additionally, the seven-game win streak is the third longest during head coach Jim Carone's tenure, as back in 2013, his Seahawk squad rattled off eight straight wins, starting from March 24, 2013 through April 1, 2013.
  • The last time the Seahawks won seven-straight was back in 2015 from March 14 through April 2.
  • Four Seahawks produced multi-hit performances on the afternoon, led by senior LF Anthony Godino, who went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Classmate Nick Mascelli also had two hits and scored twice while fellow senior Kyle Cala drove in a run while going 1-for-5. Juniors Will Johnson and Phil Capra were credited with an RBI in the victory.
  • Junior LHP Koby Bishop (2-0), making his second start of the season, gave up just two hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out a career-high six batters over five innings in earning the victory.

A LOOK AT WAGNER'S SEVEN-GAME WIN STREAK:
  • The team is batting .303 over the span of the seven-game win streak while limiting the opposition to just a .237 batting average.
  • Wagner is outscoring its opponents, 72-26, over the last seven game while connecting for nine home runs and 63 RBIs with a total OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .921.
  • On the bases, the Seahawks are 13-17 in stolen base chances (43.3%).
  • On the mound, the Green & White hurlers are pitching to a combined 3.34 ERA while the opposition is at a 7.55 ERA
  • The Seahawks have recorded 53 strikeouts to just 25 walks (2:12 to 1 strikeout-to-walk ratio) in 62.0 total innings.
  • Bishop has posted a minuscule 0.90 ERA over his two starts during Wagner's win streak. He has tossed ten innings, giving up four hits while striking out a combined ten batters to just three walks (3:33 to 1 strikeout-to-walk ratio).
  • Freshman Nick LePre has proven to be a reliable arm out of the pen for the Seahawks over the last seven games, pitching to the tune of a 1.23 ERA while making four appearances, in which has fanned four batters.

SCOUTING THE BRYANT UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS:
  • The Bulldogs were chosen as the preseason favorite in the Northeast Conference (NEC) for the sixth-straight season. Bryant enters this weekend's series with Wagner with an overall record of 7-10 and winners of three straight after earning a 8-6 road victory at Hartford this past Tuesday. James Ciliento paces the squad with a .391 batting average while Ryan Ward is the team's leading hit producer (26), RBIs (13) and triples (2).

GODINO NAMED NORTHEAST CONFERENCE (NEC) PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
  • Wagner senior outfielder Anthony Godino was named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Baseball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
  • For Godino, this marks his second career NEC Player of the Week citation, with the first honor coming back a season ago for the week of May 22. In total, this is his third weekly honor, as he garnered NEC Rookie of the Week honors for the week of April 27, 2015 during his freshman campaign.
  • With this announcement, the Player of the Week honors remains on Staten Island, as it marks back-to-back weeks that a Seahawk player earned the weekly accolade, as junior catcher Phil Capra earned Co-Player of the Week last Monday.
  • Additionally, this marks the first time since the 2015 season that Wagner has collected consecutive Player of the Week awards, 2015 NEC Player of the Year, and current Kansas City Royal, Nick Dini, won the award on April 6, 2015, followed a week later by current Seahawk Nick Mascelli repeated the honor on April 13, 2015.

UP NEXT FOR WAGNER:
  • The Seahawks are scheduled to play Big East members, St. John's, on Tuesday, March 27 at 3:00 p.m.
