Smithfield, RI - Bryant capped a four-game sweep of Wagner with a come-from-behind 11-10 victory in 10 innings at the Bryant Baseball Complex. The Bulldogs improve to 23-19 and 15-5 in the NEC while the Seahawks fall to 17-23 and 11-9 in the NEC.
After the Green & White scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning on freshman
Nick Alfano's (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) first career home run, Bryant responded with three runs. Jeff Vigurs tied the game up with a two-run single before Zakary Cianciolo won it with a two-out run-scoring single up the middle, plating Vigurs.
The Bulldgos took a 2-0 first-inning lead on the strength of four-straight hits. Kevin Brown led off with a home run to right field before Jordan English doubled to left center. After moving to third on a Vigurs bunt single, Nick Campbell plated English with a RBI single through the left side.
Bryant added to the lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Tim Norton tripled to right field with one out. Following the second out of the frame, Brown scored Norton with a run-scoring single.
Wagner finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning on senior
Vin Avella's (Matawan, NJ /CBA) team-leading 11th home run of the year, a lead-off shot to deep left field that sliced the deficit to 3-1.
The Seahawks took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning, plating three runs. Alfano laced a one-out double to center field for his first career extra-base hit. Senior
Damian Csakai (Freehold Township, NJ / Freehold Township) followed with a run-scoring single, plating Alfano. Csakai then stole his NEC-leading 30th base of the year before coming around to tie it up at 3-3 on a
Seth Boyd (Jr., Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) double to left field. Avella followed with a RBI single through the left side, plating Boyd while giving the Green & White a 4-3 lead.
The Bulldogs immediately answered in the bottom of the fifth inning. Connor Carignan led off with a walk before moving over to third on a Brown single through the right side. Nick Campbell singled to center field, scoring Carignan to make it a 4-4 game.
Bryant reclaimed the lead with a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning. Norton doubled to right field before scoring on Connor Carignan's RBI-single to center field.
Wagner immediately responded in the top of the seventh with a big two-out rally.. Alfano led off with an infield single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. After advancing to third on a ground out, Boyd drove in Alfano with a single to left field, tying the game at 5-5. Avella and junior
Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) then drew walks, loading up the bases. Junior
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) staked the Seahawks to a 7-5 lead with a two-run single through the right side, scoring Boyd and Avella.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Seahawks added an insurance run when Avella picked up his third RBI of the game with a run-scoring single, plating sophomore
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic).
The Green & White would need all three runs as Bryant batted around in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs while tying the game up at 8-8 and sending the contest into extra innings.
Wagner went back in front in the top of the 10th inning with another two-out rally. Sophomore
Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame) was plunked by a Mark Andrews offering before Alfano crushed a two-run homer, staking the Seahawks to a 10-8 lead before the Bulldogs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Alfano, who entered the game with just one hit on the year, led the way for the Green & White, going 4-for-5 with a home run, double, three runs and two RBI. Also standing out were Avella, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs, and Boyd, who was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
Avella's three RBI also give him 147 for his career, matching former Chicago Cubs farmhand and 2001 graduate
Mike Cerminaro's school-record total.
Bryant, which out-hit Wagner 18-13, was led by Brown and Vigurs, who each went 4-for-6 with a combined five RBI and for runs.
Andrews (3-1) earned the win after pitching the 10th inning. Junior LHP
Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) (0-2) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, allowing three runs, one earned, in two-thirds of an inning. Junior
David Rees (Staten Island, NY / Xavier) was outstanding in relief, allowing just one run over a career-best matching 3.0 solid innings.
Defensively, all three Wagner outfielders recorded assists while helping turn three double plays.
All four games were decided by four runs or less, including two by one run, as the Green & White were swept for the first time In league play since dropping four-straight at Quinnipiac during the 2007 season. That year, the Seahawks responded with a four-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson.
Wagner returns to action on Wednesday, May 5 when the Seahawks host NJIT at RIchmond County Bank Ballpark with first pitch slated for 7:00 pm.
