Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) then brought McDonnell around on a run-scoring single through the left side. Junior
Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) made it 10-7 with a RBI double off the fence in right center, scoring Avella all the way from first. On the play, Boyd advanced to third on a Knight miscue before scoring on a
Jon Lucas (Jr., Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 11-7.
FDU got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh inning but could get no closer as the Seahawks garnered an 11-9 victory.
Sophomore
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) led a 13-hit offensive attack, going 2-for-2 with two RBI while also drawing two walks. In today's doubleheader, he reached base safely in all eight plate appearances (4 singles, 3 walks, 1 HBP).
Avella (2-4; 2 RBI; 1 run), Boyd (2-3; 2 runs, 2 RBI, 1 double) Csakai (2-5; 3 SB; 1 run) and junior
Brian Martutartus (Carlsbad, CA / La Costa Canyon) (2-4; 4 runs, 1 double) all also notched double-figures in hits.
The Seahawks struck first in the game on Avella'a two-out RBI single in the top of the first. In the top of the third inning, the Green & White added to the lead with two runs. Csakai led off with a single before stealing second base. Martutartus then reached via a two-base fielding error as Csakai advanced to third base. Csakai then executed a perfect steal of home, making it 2-0 as Martutartus took third on the play. Boyd picked up Martutartus with a run-scoring single, pushing the lead out to 3-0. FDU put single tallies on the board in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Higgins got those runs back with a two-run two-out single in the top of the fifth inning.
The Knights took their first lead of the game in the bottom part of the frame, stringing together five runs while sending 10 batters to the plate in assuming a 7-5 lead.
Wagner then scored six times while batting around in the aforementioned sixth-inning rally.
Lucas (2-3) earned his second collegiate victory, striking out three while yielding seven runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.0 innings. Sophomore
Mark Holmes (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan), who was pitching for just the second time this year, finished off the win with 2.0 innings of solid relief, striking out one while allowing two runs on two hits. Game-one winner Spencer Kelly (1-5) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on one hit and two walks over 0.2 innings of work.
Brian Dillon went 3-for-4 while Matt Holsman added a pair of doubles, pacing FDU.
The teams will conclude their four-game set tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
