Delaware State Defeats Wagner 9-1

Delaware State handed Wagner a 9-1 defeat in the first of a four game set at Soldier Field. The Green & White (5-4) claimed the early 1-0 lead only to see the Hornets (6-8-1) strike for nine unanswered runs.

Leading the way for Wagner was sophomore Joe Jamison (West Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell), who went 2-4 with a run while extending his hitting streak to eight games.

The Seahawks took their only early lead of the game with a second-inning run. Jamison led off with a single to right field. Classmate Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) followed with a walk before senior Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) loaded the bases with an infield hit. Sophomore Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) brought around Jamison with a RBI ground out, making it 1-0 Wagner.

From that point on it was all Hornets.

Delaware State responded with two runs in the bottom part of the second, using a walk and a pair of hits, to take the lead at 2-1.

The Hornets added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth with four runs while chasing Wagner starter RHP AJ Pirozzi (Staten Island, NY / Farrell). Pirozzi, who was sidelined in all of 2008 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, made his first start of the year and struck out four over 3.1 innings of work. He yielded five runs on five hits in falling to 0-1 on the year.

Delaware State's Dan Perkins improved to 1-2 on the year with a complete game, seven strikeout performance. He yielded just one run on four hits and four walks and retired 14 in a row at one point.

The Hornets added a single run in the seventh and two in the eighth to win 9-1. Jared Lineweaver went 3-4 to while Jose Sanchez went 2-4 with three RBI to lead the way for a Delaware State offense that recorded 13 hits.

The teams will meet again tomorrow with a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
