Julian Stanford, Football 12/1/11

Senior outside linebacker Julian Stanford had a major impact throughout the season for the Seahawks and was perhaps at his best down the stretch when he helped Wagner close the season with three straight November wins, a 27-21 victory over Sacred Heart (Nov. 5), a 38-17 win at Robert Morris (Nov. 12), followed by the season-ending 44-29 triumph at Monmouth. The athletic 6-2, 225-pound Stanford made several game-altering plays in a month that culminated with his being named to the Northeast Conference (NEC) First Team. Stanford made his final game as a Seahawk a memorable one at Monmouth as he produced a pair of game-changing plays. With the game tied at 14-14 and the Hawks facing a fourth down, Stanford broke through and stuffed the kick.  Fellow senior Jeremiah Brown (Brooklyn, NY/ grand Street Campus) scooped up the loose ball and took it in for the go-ahead score. Thanks to this momentum-changing play, Stanford was named the NEC Special Teams Player of the Week. In the fourth quarter, Stanford returned an interception, his third of the season, 37 yards for a fourth-quarter score. For Stanford it was his second “pick-six” of the season, his first coming in the come-from-behind Senior Day victory over Sacred Heart, a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown which jump-started the Seahawks’ 20-0 fourth quarter burst. In the three November games, Stanford totaled 14 tackles, three quarterback hurries, the two interceptions, one sack, and one blocked kick.
