Baseball Heads to Take on Second-Place Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. — Wagner hits the road to take on second-place Stonehill this weekend in its latest NEC series.

Fresh off a series sweep over Norfolk State, the Seahawks are now 12-6 in conference play, just behind the 11-4 Skyhawks.

Best in the Nation

Graduate Lukas Torres, currently with as hot a bat as anyone in the nation, is batting .456 heading into the weekend. That has him with the second best batting average in all of Division I baseball and his .579 on-base percentage leads the country. Torres has been elite in conference play, batting .485 in 18 NEC contests.

He leads the NEC in each of those categories, also sitting second in hits with 52 and third in runs scored (41) and walks (35).

Last Week Out

Stonehill suffered a series loss at the hands of NEC-leading FDU, falling 14-9, 6-5 in ten innings then taking the finale 15-8. The Skyhawks come off a 20-10 loss in eight innings to UMass Lowell.

Wagner earned a series sweep over Norfolk State at home, taking down the Spartans 15-2 in the opener behind a complete game from starter Colin Trizuto, who went 7.0 innings and allowed just the two runs. On the offensive side, Wagner scored its 15 runs on 17 hits, including four from Torres and three from redshirt junior Evan McRae. Junior Diego Tavarez and senior Nicholas Mazzotta collected three RBIs apiece.

Saturday's 3-2 win over the Spartans was a more stressful event, with redshirt sophomore Joseph Steventon and junior Keith Davis combining to allow just a pair of runs, with Steventon going 7.0 innings and striking out five before Davis entered in relief. The Seahawks finished with just five hits in what was the team's first walk-off win of the season — McRae scored from third on a balk to win the game.

It was another strong pitching performance that grounded Wagner's 12-1 win on Sunday, with senior Justin Roitman throwing 6.0 innings where he allowed just one run on three hits while tying the single-game strikeout high by a single Wagner pitcher at eight. Sophomore William Grayson retired three Spartans in order to secure the run-rule victory. Torres finished with three of Wagner's 14 hits and seven Seahawks added an RBI.

The Seahawks hit the road for the midweek, taking on Army West Point at Doubleday Field. It was ultimately an 18-8 win for the Black Knights, but Wagner's eight runs scored were the most the team has put up in a midweek game in 2026.

The 2025 Series

Wagner hosted the Skyhawks to end March in 2026, winning the opener 8-2 at SIUH Community Park on Friday, March 28 on the way to a series sweep. The Seahawks took an 8-3 win on Saturday to take the series, then had a quieter offensive performance with a 4-2 Sunday win to secure the sweep.

In that series, then-freshman Matt Sutera went 7-of-12 with two doubles and a monster two-run home run that was the first of his career. In that Saturday game, Sutera's home run was part of a three-hit day where he was a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Those three hits were a new single-game career high for the freshman. Sutera was named NEC Rookie of the Week for the third time for the performance.

Scouting the Skyhawks

Stonehill is currently batting .280, good for fifth in the NEC, with a 6.50 ERA from its pitching staff that leads the conference. The Skyhawks' pitchers are holding opponents to a .281 batting average.

Graduate Sam Parks leads the Stonehill hitters, batting .327 in 30 games started. The only other Skyhawk hitter to have started 30 games, junior Ryan LeClair is batting .302 with a team-leading eight doubles.

Graduate Ryan Douglas leads the Skyhawks' pitching, coming into the weekend with 39.1 innings pitched and a 5.26 ERA. Douglas has eight starts, striking out 26 and walking just seven with opposing batters hitting .317 against the righty.
