STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Wagner has wrapped up its three non-conference series and now looks to NEC play, opening a stretch of 11 weekend series against conference opponents with a home slate against the FDU Knights.
Scouting the Knights
FDU sits at 2-5 entering NEC play, taking home wins over Iona and Gardner Webb.
The Knights opened their season in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, taking a 6-0 win over Gardner Webb on opening day before dropping a close 7-6 loss to Dartmouth on Saturday, Feb. 21. Taking on Gardner Webb again that Saturday, the Knights took a 10-1 loss before their Sunday finale against Dartmouth was canceled.
A weekend series at Georgetown saw the Knights fall 12-1, 7-2 and 6-5 in Tysons, Virginia before their first home game of the season, a Wednesday midweek on March 4 against the Iona Gaels. FDU emerged with a 4-3 win, carrying that success into their series at Wagner.
Sophomore Hunter Ray currently leads all FDU batters with a .333 average, starting all seven of the team's games to sit at eight hits and five walks. He is the only Knight batting above .300 at this point in the season. Second in batting average at .273 is senior Diego Urreta, whose eight walks lead the team in that category.
Senior Jeremy Cheeseman has logged the most time on the mound, set to start Saturday after two starts this season. Through 11.0 innings pitched, Cheeseman has a 4.09 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, allowing five runs to score on 14 hits and walking just one batter.
State of the Seahawks
Wagner will look, once again, to senior Colin Trizuto as its Friday starter. Now three appearances and three starts into the season, Trizuto has thrown 12.2 innings and currently holds an 8.53 ERA and 2.29 WHIP, with opponents batting .333 against the righty. Graduate Vincent Corso had a solid outing against the Terrapins on March 1, throwing 2.0 scoreless innings where he struck out two.
In terms of hitters, graduate Lukas Torres leads all batters with a .400 average in nine games played. He has logged 12 hits, including three doubles and a triple, with a team-leading 10 walks and just three strikeouts. Behind Torres, four Seahawks are batting north of .300 — junior Dylan Immel, junior Omar Carreras, junior Joseph Mennella and sophomore Jayden Alvarez. Mennella's eight home runs lead the team and his ten total hits are second behind Torres.
Junior Diego Tavarez and sophomore Matt Sutera — batting .292 and .259, respectively — pull their weight by batting runs in, each sitting second on the team with seven RBIs on seven hits apiece. Tavarez is third on the team in walks with six and Sutera is fourth, with five.
NEC Nod
Mennella was named NEC Player of the Week for week three, coming off a weekend at Maryland where he hit two home runs, batting .545 across three games and batting in six runs on six hits.
Mennella has been a powerful hitter for the Seahawks since joining last season and primarily playing at designated hitter, moving to first base for 2026. Mennella homered in the third inning of game one to score three runs, pushing the Wagner lead to 5-2. Due back up in the fourth, Mennella put a ball over the fence in back-to-back at-bats, scoring three more runs and giving the Seahawks an 8-6 lead.
His .613 slugging percentage currently sits ninth in the conference and his eight RBIs are good for fifth in conference.
Familiar Faces
Senior Nicholas Mazzotta arrived to Grymes Hill last season as a transfer from FDU and has since made himself an instrumental part of the Wagner lineup, currently sitting with five hits, four RBIs and three stolen bases. Mazzotta has made one appearance on the mound, a 1.0-inning that earned the save on the way to Wagner's first win.
Graduate Jeremy Delamota, a Queens native, spent his 2025 season with the Seahawks before transferring to FDU. In 2026, Delamota has started seven games for the Knights, logging six hits, two RBIs and two doubles for a .240 average heading into conference play.
