Women’s Basketball Welcomes Iona For Home Opener On Monday

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's basketball team will host Iona for its home opener on Monday evening, tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Spiro Sports Center.

Last Time Out
Wagner dropped its fourth consecutive road non-conference game to begin the 2023-24 season with a 63-46 loss at Northeastern on Tuesday, November 21.

Junior Semie Brar netted a career-high 23 points on 9-13 shooting from the floor and 5-8 shooting from three-point range. Freshman Kiera Edmonds chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds for the Green & White.

Defense Continues To Impress
Wagner's 11.0 steals per game is good for 56th in the nation. Junior Rakisha Ballinger ranks first in the Northeast Conference (NEC) and 63rd nationally with 2.75 steals per game. Classmate Paige Lyons is averaging 2.0 steals per contest for the Seahawks.

Relentless On The Boards
Wagner's 13.2 offensive rebounds per game ranks first in the NEC and 142nd in the nation. Kiera Edmonds' 7.5 rebounds per game ranks first in the NEC, the Brooklyn, NY native has tallied at least seven rebounds in three consecutive contests.

The Emergence Of Semie Brar
Semie Brar tallied 23 points at Northeastern, a career-high and team-high through the first four games of the season. Brar is the first Seahawk to score at least 20 points since senior Julia Fabozzi tallied 20 at Stonehill on February 23, 2023

The Fresno, CA native's 23 points is the highest point total since former Seahawk Alex Cowan tallied 26 points against St. Francis Brooklyn on February 9, 2023.

Brar's five three-pointers is the most in a contest since former Seahawk Lina Loceniece launched five against New Hampshire on November 28, 2021.

Bar's 10.0 points per game ranks first on the Seahawks.

The Series
Wagner has lost six consecutive games to Iona and is 1-6 lifetime against the Gaels. Last season, Iona defeated Wagner 87-62, Wagner's last win against Iona came back in 2003.

Scouting Iona
Iona comes to the Spiro Sports Center with a 1-3 record this season. Iona's lone victory came against NEC member LIU on November 12 as the Gaels earned an 80-59 victory.

The Gaels were selected seventh in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) preseason poll, Iona captured the MAAC title last season.

The Gaels return seven players from the 2023 MAAC Championship squad including top returning scorers in graduate Natalia Otkhmezuri, junior Judith Gomez and sophomore Noa Givon.
