Late Fourth-Quarter Push Falls Short as Women’s Basketball Drops Matchup at FDU

TEANECK, N.J. — The Wagner College women's basketball team fell to the defending NEC champions, FDU, by a score of 52-45 at the Bogota Savings Bank Center on Saturday afternoon.

Wagner (10-11, 6-4 NEC) lost a conference game for the first time since falling to the Knights back on Jan. 15 at the Spiro Sports Center. Prior to Saturday's game, the Seahawks had won four straight conference games — defeating New Haven, Le Moyne, LIU, and CCSU — throughout the last two weeks of NEC play.

The Seahawks outscored the Knights 17-10 in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead down to as little as five points with 49 seconds to play. FDU (19-4, 10-0 NEC) built a 42-28 lead after three quarters of action and came away with a seven points victory.

For FDU, Saturday's game marked the program's 29th consecutive win against conference opponents.

Senior Irene Fernandez de Caleya and junior Lijirin Doyinsola Modesayor led Wagner with 10 points apiece. Fernandez de Caleya grabbed seven rebounds while Modesayor corralled six. Sophomore Keana Foz scored eight points, all of which were in the fourth quarter.

Senior Angelie Ricard and redshirt senior Priscila Varela both scored six points while senior Maria Doreste added five points to round out the scoring column for the Seahawks.

The Knights outscored the Seahawks 13-2 in second chance points. FDU snagged 19 offensive rebounds while Wagner only grabbed six.

Wagner outscored FDU 26-16 in paint points but only succeeded on 1-7 (14.3%) from beyond-the-arc; comparatively, the Knights shot 6-28 (21.4%) from deep. From the free throw line, the Seahawks shot 8-18 (44.4%) while the Knights shot 12-18 (66.7%).

Next up, the Green & White travel upstate to Le Moyne for a 6 p.m. tip-off on Thursday, Feb. 5 at Ted Grant Court.
