Men's Lacrosse Set For Matchup At Manhattan On Saturday

Riverdale, NY- The Wagner men's lacrosse team returns to action Saturday at Manhattan with opening faceoff scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Gaelic Park. 
 
LAST TIME OUT…
 
  • Wagner fell to Fairfield, 16-9, in the season opener in Connecticut.
  • Six different Seahawks cracked the goal sheet, with Stephen Dwyer, Ethan Sieb, and Aidan Clark recording a multi-goal game.
  • Also finding the back of the net were Daniel Mercado, Tyler Lawton, and Danny Cassidy.
  • Three different Seahawks scored goals for the first time while wearing the Green & White (Sieb, D. Mercado, and Cassidy).
  • Goalkeeper Danny Brady notched seven saves in 40 minutes of action. Nate Yi also saw time in net and made his collegiate debut, saving three shots over the final 20 minutes of play.
  • Senior captain Tommy Scarpello led the defense in ground balls with four and caused two turnovers.
  • Defenseman Matt Morris led the team in caused turnovers with four.
 
WAGNER NOTES…
 
  • Three players recorded a multi-goal game last Saturday (Dwyer, Sieb, and Clark). The Green & White only had two games last year in which at least three players scored multiple goals.
  • Wagner caused ten turnovers in the first game of 2022. The last time the Green & White caused that many turnovers dates back to April 27, 2019 vs Sacred Heart when the Seahawks caused 13.
  • The Seahawks tallied nine goals against the Stags. Only twice last season Wagner scored nine goals in a game.
  • Freshman attackman Ethan Sieb achieved Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week. The last Seahawk to receive NEC weekly honors was goalkeeper Danny Brady when he earned Defensive Player of the Week last April. Sieb's accolade is the first Rookie of the Week award for Wagner since Stephen Dwyer in March of 2019.
 

 
DWYER DOMINANCE…
 
  • Midfielder Stephen Dwyer was active in the season opener, pacing Wagner with ten shots, seven coming on goal. The senior scored two goals and collected a ground ball against Fairfield.   
  • Dwyer's first goal of the afternoon was his 60th career point in just 41 games as a Seahawk.
  • With last Saturday's multi-goal game, Dwyer now 11 games in his career in which he has scored more than one goal.
  • The Somerville, NJ native now ranks 15th on the program's all-time goals list with 41.
 
BRADY BUNCH OF SAVES…
 
  • With seven saves last Saturday, goalkeeper Danny Brady moved into sixth place on the Wagner men's lacrosse all-time saves list with 213.
  • Brady needs four saves to pass Ian Gallagher to move into fifth place on the list.
  • The junior netminder has started all 17 games as a member of the Green & White and has logged over 882 minutes of action.
 
IMMEDIATE IMPACT FROM FRESHMEN…
 
  • Rookies Ethan Sieb and Daniel Mercado both found the back of the net in their collegiate debuts last Saturday for the Seahawks.
  • Sieb was the first Seahawk to post a multi-goal performance in his Wagner debut since Tyler Lawton in 2020, when he scored four goals against Hofstra.
  • The Frankfort, IL native also collected two ground balls and caused a turnover in the game.
 
SCOUTING REPORT: MANHATTAN…
 
  • The Jaspers enter Saturday's contest with a 1-2 record, most recently coming off a 9-6 loss to Navy.
  • Manhattan is being outscored 36-27 through three games in 2022.
  • Jaspers goalkeeper Brendan Krebs has logged all 180 minutes on the season and has stopped 39 shots in net. Krebs is the reigning MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and an All-MAAC First Team selection. The graduate was also just named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week.
  • Attackman Kyle Gucwa leads the team in goals (9) and points (12). The junior posted four-goal games in the first two contests of the season.
  • Gucwa is leading all Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference players in goals, points, and shots.
 
SERIES HISTORY…
 
  • Saturday's matchup between the Seahawks and the Jaspers marks the 20th meeting all-time with Manhattan holding a 17-2 edge in the series.
  • Of those 19 meetings, four have been decided by one goal.
  • Manhattan won the most recent meeting, 16-5, on February 22, 2020 at Hameline Field on Grymes Hill.
  • The last time the Seahawks visited Riverdale, NY, they dropped a hard-fought game, 11-10 on February 9, 2019.
  • Wagner last defeated Manhattan back on February 10, 2018 in an 11-5 season-opening home victory.
