Men's Lacrosse Opens Season On Saturday At Fairfield

Fairfield, CT-  The Wagner men's lacrosse team opens the 2022 season on the road on Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks will square off against the Fairfield Universtiy Stags at 1:00 p.m. from Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.

LOOKING AT THE 2022 SEAHAWKS...

  • For Scarpello, this marks his second season leading the team. The Tabernacle, NJ native enters his senior season having played in 21 games while earning the start 16 times. Last season, he ranked third on the club in ground balls (19) and caused turnovers (5).
  • Fisher gets his first nod as a team captain in 2022. The Allentown, PA native has appeared in 14 games (12 games as a starter) over his first two seasons on Grymes Hill. Fisher continued to display his leadership last November, when he was one of two athletes selected to represent the Northeast Conference (NEC) at the 2021-22 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum. Additionally, he was one of approximately 300 student-athletes, coaches, and administrators to attend last year's conference in Houston, TX.

SERIES HISTORY...
  • Saturday's contest between the Seahawks and Stags marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

WELCOME BACK...

  • Wagner returns 23 players from 2021's squad, including eight sophomores, seven juniors, seven seniors, and one graduate.
  • From this group, Scarpello and junior goalie Danny Brady are the only two Seahawks to start all 10 games from last season. Other returners for The Green & White to appear in every game in 2021 are junior defender Brendan Higgins and sophomore defender Daren Mayer
  • Senior midfielder Stephen Dwyer finished second in goals last season with 14 in eight games played and looks to continue his scoring ways for the Seahawks in 2022. The Somerville, NJ native also posted nine assists and totaled 19 points, good for second on the team.
  • The Seahawks will also have their top six leaders in ground balls back, including Scarpello, Higgins, Brady, Mayer, Matt Morris, and Matt Rueter.

NEW TO THE MIX...

  • Wagner welcomed 14 freshmen, a sophomore transfer, and two graduates as part of its 17 first-year group of players ahead of the 2022 campaign.
  • Danny Cassidy comes from Stony Brook, where he started all 14 games of the Seawolves' season. Cassidy's career before Wagner includes a second-team All-America East Conference selection in 2019.
  • Dan McCauley comes from DePauw where he tallied 20 points, 23 ground balls, and caused four turnovers last season.

LEADING US...

  • Bill McCutcheon continues his tenure on Grymes Hill in his fourth season at the helm of the Seahawks. He will be assisted by Marc Zolchonock (third year) and Dan Crotty (first year).

NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS, NEW FIT...

  • The Seahawks revealed new threads for the new season. Wagner is back in the primary Green & White. The Nike uniforms feature green jerseys with "Seahawks" across the chest and white numbering on the front and back with matching green shorts that have the Seahawk logo on the front of them.

  • Wagner also has fresh new white helmets, with the Seahawk logo on each side.

SCOUTING REPORT - FAIRFIELD...

  • The Stags opened their 2022 season on the road last Saturday with a 13-12 last-minute goal defeat to Stony Brook. Midfielder Bryce Ford led Fairfield with a career-high six goals and eight points. The Stags also had a hat trick from midfielder Taylor Strough.
  • Goalie Anthony Palma earned the victory with 13 saves in net.

2022 Schedule

  • The Seahawks will play 12 regular season games in 2022, with six contested at Hameline Field on Grymes Hill and six on the road. Wagner opens with three straight road contests before the home opener against NJIT on March 5. The slate consists of five non-conference games and seven Northeast Conference (NEC) matchups.
