Staten Island, NY -  After splitting last weekend's opener against Lafayette, the Wagner College baseball wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule this weekend against the University of Maine Black Bears of the America East Conference.

Seahawks On The Mound...
  • Ryan Lauk is making his second start of the season. The Mullica Hill, NJ native struck out six batters in the season opener against Lafayette.
  • Game two's starter, Pat Gallagher allowed two in the nightcap against the Leopards in his first start of the 2021 campaign.
  • Josh Casado is making his first collegiate start for the Seahawks in Sunday's series finale. Casado made his Wagner debut in Wagner's 14-12 triumph over the Leopards, as he pitched 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.
  • Kevin Wiseman picked up his first save of the year and third of his Seahawk tenure, as he pitched the final two innings of game two, while recording two strikeouts.

Wagner At The Plate...
  • Tyler Sanfilippo was named Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week for the second time in his career after going 3 for 5 in the second game of the doubleheader against Lafayette.
  • All three of the Wayne, NJ native's hits came via the long ball as he finished with 7 RBI on the night.
  • Freddy Sabido, Johnny Kampes and newcomer Caleb Ward each had multi-RBI games across the doubleheader.
  • Sanfilippo and Sabido pace the club with three hits apiece.

Last Season...
  • Wagner finished the 2020 season with a 6-8 record; the season was cut short in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Henry Martinez and Cody Bey batted .292 and .291, respectively, were among the top-15 in the Northeast Conference (NEC).
  • As a team, the Seahawks led the NEC in walks (67) and finished second in hits (101) and RBI (51).
  • The Green & White hurlers combined to strike out a league-best (131). In 2020, three Seahawks finished among the top-15 in strikeouts, led by McCae Allen (28). Fifth-year Seahawk, Ryan Lauk, finished fourth with 24 strikeouts while junior John LaPointe rounded out the top-15 with 14 strikeouts.
  •  In relief, Kevin Wiseman earned two saves in 2020, which tied him for the fourth-most in the conference.

Seahawk Tidbits...
  • Wagner head coach, Jim Carone, needs three wins for 200 in his career.
  • He would be just the second Seahawk bench boss to achieve the feat, joining Joe Litterio, who amassed 240 wins in his 12-year tenure on Grymes Hill.
  • The Seahawks were picked third in the NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Wagner returns 34 players from the 2020 squad while welcoming eight newcomers.
  • Among the returners, Freddy Sabido is vying to become the 12th Seahawks all-time to reach 200 career hits as he enters the 2021 season with 192 career hits. Additionally, he ranks eighth all-time in program history in both home runs and RBI, with 22 and 118 RBI.
  • Under coach Carone, Wagner is 3-6 all-time on Opening Day, after picking up an 11-10 triumph over Norfolk State last season.

Wagner Alums In Professional Baseball...
  • The Seahawk program has seven alums (five players; two coaches) represented across seven different Major League Baseball (MLB) organizations.
    • Ben Ruta – San Diego Padres
  • Mike Adams – Philadelphia Phillies
  • Nolan Long – Los Angeles Dodgers

Against Maine...
  • The all-time series between these two teams is tied at 5-5.
  • The last time they met, back in 2009, Wagner took two-of-three from the Black Bears.

 About The Black Bears...
  • Maine comes into this weekend's contest at 3-2 after dropping its most recent contest at #13 Boston College, 10-5, back on Tuesday.
  • The Black Bears were projected to finish eighth in the America East Baseball Preseason Poll.
  • Ryan Turenne leads the team with a .455 batting average while Connor Goodman and Sean Lawlor have scored five runs.
  • Jeff Mejia is the team's RBI leader with six on the young season.

On Deck...
  • Wagner opens Northeast Conference (NEC) with a three-game set at Fairleigh Dickinson, beginning on Friday, March 19.
