Piscataway, NJ  – The Wagner baseball team opens the 2019 Northeast Conference (NEC) portion of its schedule as the Seahawks will meet the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers in a three-game set, beginning on Friday afternoon, March 15, at 1:00 p.m. at Bainton Field on the campus of Rutgers University. 
SCHEDULE UPDATE (3/14/2019) - Wagner announced on Thursday morning a change of venue for its three-game series against Mount St. Mary's this weekend.

The Series: 
  • Wagner and Mount St. Mary's have faced each other 101 times in program history with the Seahawks leading the head-to-head series, 60-41.
  • Last season, the Green & White took all four regular season games from the Mount and earned a 3-1 victory in the elimination game of the 2018 NEC Tournament. 
About The Seahawks:
  • Senior Will Johnson ranks among the top-50 in the country, drawing 1.08 base on balls per game, which is the second-best mark in the conference behind CCSU's Dave Matthews (1.13). 
  • The Toms River, NJ native is 18th in the entire NCAA in on-base percentage with a .558 percentage, good for second in the conference (Mount's Myles Nicholson, .571). 
  • The Seahawks snapped a three-game losing streak on Wednesday afternoon, defeating local rival, Fordham, 3-2. 
  • The victory snapped the Rams season-high seven game win streak and was the first defeat of the season at home for Fordham (5-1). 
  • On the mound, seniors Eric Ligda and Neil Abbatiello are ranked among the top-five in strikeouts with Ligda sharing the conference lead with Sacred Heart's Brent Teller at 15. Abbatiello is fifth with 11 punchouts while junior Nick Zuppe is tied for sixth with 10.
About Mount St. Mary's:
  • The Mountaineers will look to get back into the win column after dropping two straight, most recently, the final game of its their Florida Spring Trip, to Ball State, 12-9. 
  • Ryan Fisher is the team's leading hitter, batting .458 through the first eleven games. 
  • Myles Nicholson, who is batting .455, leads the team with 15 hits, 14 runs scored and stolen bases with 12. 
  • On the mound, Noah Smith and Michael Kuypers have pitched to a sub 1.00 ERA with Kuypers leading the hurlers with two wins.
  • Jordan Geber has the most strikeouts (17) and walks (8) thus far.

Wagner in 2018:
  • The Green & White are coming off a magical season, in which the ball club rewrote several records, including setting the new benchmark for wins in a single-season (38) and conference victories (21). 
  • Wagner rattled off two separate, nine-game winning streaks (March 10-25 & March 29-April 11), outscoring its opponents by a combined 151-to-66. 
  • The Seahawks concluded the 2018 season winning 13 of its final 17 contests to claim a share of the 2018 Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season championship, the first time program has done so since 2009. 
  • Wagner went 13-1 in home contests (7-0 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George) while leading the entire NCAA with 23 road triumphs a season ago. 
  • In the NEC, Wagner led the circuit in ERA (4.15) while finishing the regular season with a league-best .974 fielding percentage. The club ranked second in hits (505), total bases (751) and stolen bases (61). 
  • Individually, Wagner had a program-high six all-league selections, four of which being named to the First Team, which includes rising senior left-hander, Neil Abbatiello, junior reliever, Nick Robino and classmate, Freddy Sabido, who returns as the team's leader in most offensive categories. 
  • Head Coach Jim Carone, who embarks on his eighth season, was named NEC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, becoming the first Wagner baseball head coach to win the award multiple times.
  • Robino was named 2019 Collegiate Baseball Pre-Season All-American, powered by Diamond Sports and announced by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper back on December 18, 2018.
  • Wagner was picked third in the preseason coaches' poll that was announced back on February 1. 
 
On Deck: 
  • The Seahawks are set to host Big East members, Seton Hall, on March 19 with first-pitch slated for 3:00 p.m.
