Riverdale, NY – Coming off of Saturday's riveting season-opening come-from-behind 7-6 overtime win at Bellarmine, the Wagner men's lacrosse team looks to make it two in a row at Manhattan on Saturday with faceoff between the Seahawks and Jaspers set for 1:00 p.m.
In the 2019 season opener on Saturday at Bellarmine,
senior midfielder Spencer Kaufman scored the game-winning goal with 1:17 remaining in the first overtime session off an assist from junior midfielder
Tim Schmidt as the
Bill McCutcheon era began on a victorious note.
Kaufman opened the third quarter with his second goal at the 9:05 mark, an unassisted score, giving Wagner its first lead of the contest, 4-3. After Bellarmine's Landon Trout scored to make it 4-4, freshman midfielder
Stephen Dwyer put the visitors ahead, 5-4, with an unassisted tally of his own at the 5:11 mark of the third quarter.
Morgan Macko found the back of the net at the 2:36 mark in tying the game at 5-5, which is how the game remained heading to the pivotal fourth quarter. Just 52 seconds into the fourth, Bellarmine's Stephen Votto put the Knights ahead 6-5. Wagner quickly responded as senior
John Norton located Cechini and the veteran midfielder buried the tying score with 9:01 left.
Neither team could find the net the rest of the way, forcing overtime and setting the stage for Kaufman's eventual game-winner.
For their efforts in the win at Bellarmine, Kaufman, along with sophomore defenseman
Kyle Stofko, who had four caused turnovers and four ground balls. were named to
collegelacrosse.com's Team of the Week.
This Saturday's contest will mark the Jaspers' season opener and the fourth consecutive season that these teams will meet. In the three previous matchups, Wagner has gone 2-1, most recently,
recording a season-opening 11-5 win on February 10, 2018 at Hameline Field.
In this contest, senior attackman
Andrew Streilein poured in three goals, in addition to assisting on another, and the Wagner team used a 6-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to pull away for the win.
In last year's win over the Jaspers, current Seahawks
John Norton and
Nic Ancona finished with two goals apiece while goalie
Matt Sefcik was stout in goal, coming up with 15 saves. Last season's victory avenged a 14-13 triple-overtime loss at Manhattan on February 11, 2017. Wagner took the first game in this three-game series on February 12, 2016, a 15-8 decision on Staten Island.
