San Diego, CA – The 2019 Wagner baseball season opens its 2019 season later this evening in San Diego, CA when the Seahawks take on the University of San Diego (USD) Toreros in a three-game set that commences at 9:00 p.m (EST) at Fowler Park and Cunningham Field.

About The Seahawks:
  • The Green & White are coming off a magical season, in which the ball club rewrote several records, including setting the new benchmark for wins in a single-season (38) and conference victories (21). 
  • Wagner rattled off two separate, nine-game winning streaks (March 10-25 & March 29-April 11), outscoring its opponents by a combined 151-to-66. 
  • The Seahawks concluded the 2018 season winning 13 of its final 17 contests to claim a share of the 2018 Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season championship, the first time program has done so since 2009. 
  • Wagner went 13-1 in home contests (7-0 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George) while leading the entire NCAA with 23 road triumphs. 
  • In the NEC, Wagner led the circuit in ERA (4.15) while finishing the regular season with a league-best .974 fielding percentage. 
  • The club ranked second in hits (505), total bases (751) and stolen bases (61). 
  • Individually, Wagner had a program-high six all-league selections, four of which being named to the First Team, which includes rising senior left-hander, Neil Abbatiello, junior reliever, Nick Robino and classmate, Freddy Sabido, who returns as the team's leader in most offensive categories. 
  • Head Coach Jim Carone, who embarks on his eighth season, was named NEC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, becoming the first Wagner baseball head coach to win the award multiple times
  • Senior outfielder, Joe Silvestrone, enters the 2019 season needing just three hits to become the 61st member of the 100-hit club. 
  • Robino was named 2019 Collegiate Baseball Pre-Season All-American, powered by Diamond Sports and announced by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper back on December 18, 2018
  • Wagner was picked third in the preseason coaches' poll that was announced back on February 1. 

About The Toreros:
  • San Diego, who competes out of the West Coast Conference, returners five position players back who started 42 or more games a season ago. 
  • Catchers Adam Kerner and Shane McGuire, were both selected to the 2019 All-WCC Preseason Baseball Team and are coming off seasons when they were named freshman All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Kerner hit .338 while McGuire batted .287 and led the Toreros in on-base percentage .417.
  • Jeff Houghtby, who batted .262, leads all returning players with 24 RBI.  
  • Chris Murphy, posted a 6-5 record last season, fanned 91 batters in 81 innings. 
  • USD is coming off a 23-32 season and were predicted to finish fourth in the WCC preseason poll. 
 
The Series:
  • Wagner and San Diego are meeting for the first time in program history. 
  • The Seahawks have yet to play a member of the West Coast Conference. 
  • This weekend's start in California marks the first time since the 2015 season in which Wagner is out on the West Coast, as the squad played a three-game set at CSU Bakersfield (Mar.6-8) and concluded against Fresno State (Mar.10-11). 

Seahawks On Opening Day:
Road Warriors: 
  • Wagner led the entire NCAA with 23 road victories a season ago.
  • The Seahawks will start the year with 16 games away from Grymes Hill before coming home on March 15 to open Northeast Conference (NEC) play against Mount St. Mary's 

 
On Deck: 
  • Following the three-game stint on the West Coast, Wagner will head to Johnson City, TN as the Seahawks will clash with East Tennessee State in a three-game set,  February 22-24.
