Queens, NY  – Winners of nine of its last ten games, the Wagner baseball team will make the short trip to Queens as the Seahawks square off against the St. John's Red Storm on Tuesday, March 27 at 3:00 p.m in a contest that was originally scheduled to be Green & White home game but was shifted due to field conditions. 
 

ALL-TIME AGAINST ST. JOHN'S:
  • Wagner and St. John's are meeting for the 68th time with the all-time series favoring the Red Storm by a count of 57-10.
  • All-time, the Seahawks are just 2-26 when playing St. John's as the road team, with the last victory coming back in the second game of an April 3, 2013 doubleheader, when the Green & White came from behind to win, 22-16. (Full Recap: Click Here)
  • Wagner is looking to snap a three-game losing streak against its NYC rival, as St. John's earned a 6-2 win the last time these two teams met on March 29, 2017.
  • In that contest, Wagner kept it close early with a Red Storm team that was ranked  No. 5 in the nation at the time, before the Johnnies erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the difference.



LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER (MARCH 25, 2018 – DOUBLEHEADER – GAME 1; WAGNER 3, BRYANT 2 | GAME 2; WAGNER 1, BRYANT 3)
  • Wagner opened up Northeast Conference (NEC) play by taking two of three from the Bryant University Bulldogs, earning a 8-6 victory on Saturday before splitting Sunday twinbill, winning game one by the score of 3-2 and falling in the nightcap, 3-1.
  • The Seahawks extended its season-high win streak to nine games and became the first NEC team since Sacred Heart in 2013 to win a series against the Bulldogs.
  • In game one, the Seahawks erupted for three early runs and got a solid start from junior Neil Abbatiello, they held off a late rally in earning the one-run win.
  • Senior LF Anthony Godino was one of six Seahawks to post a hit in the contest, including what turned out to be a game changer as his first inning two-run double got the scoring going for Wagner. Sophomore designated hitter Freddy Sabido sent a RBI grounder to second base for the third run of the inning.
  • Abbatiello was masterful on the hill in the twinbill opener, earning his third victory of the season (3-0). The Dobbs Ferry, NY native allowed a fifth-inning two-out double to Ryan Ward while walking four batters and striking out four while allowing just two earned runs. The third-year left-hander retired 14 of the first 18 batters he faced before allowing the fifth inning hit.
  • Senior left-hander Brad Currao came on in relief of Abbatiello, working two scoreless innings, striking out one and walking one. Sophomore right-hander Nick Robino worked a scoreless ninth in earning his second save of the season and third of his career.
  • In the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader, the Wagner baseball team saw its nine-game winning streak end, dropping the series finale to Bryant, 3-1, at MCU Park.
  • Junior southpaw Koby Bishop (2-1) suffered his first career loss after throwing five innings of three-hit ball, while giving up all three runs. Fellow left-hander Keaton Freire and freshman right-hander Nick LePre combined to finish the game throwing four scoreless frames, without allowing a hit. Freire walked two and struck out two batters in his three innings of work.
  • Junior 1B Phil Capra contributed two of Wagner's four hits, while driving in the only run of the contest for the Green & White. Seniors Nick Mascelli and Sean Mazzio each went 1-for-4 with Mascelli scoring the lone run.




 
ABOUT THE ST. JOHN'S RED STORM:
  • St. John's enters Tuesday's contest with an 11-7 overall record after defeating Binghamton over the weekend, 4-0 and 8-2 on Sunday.
  • The Red Storm pitching staff has compiled an ERA of 2.26, which is fourth in the NCAA and leads the Big East.
  • John Valente leads the team in eight statistical categories: average (.413), runs (17), hits (31), triples (2), home runs (3), RBI (18), slugging % (.600 and on-base percentage (.432)
  • Valente, along with Sean Mooney, were named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll. Mooney recorded the win on Saturday in the series opener against the Bearcats, tossing 5.1 scoreless frames in the 4-0 victory. He struck out eight while walking two and gave up just five hits in improving  to 5-1 on the season, with those five wins placing him in a tie for the is currently tied for the national lead.

NINE-GAME WIN STREAK IN PERSPECTIVE:
  • Wagner rattled off an impressive nine-game winning streak that stretched from the team's 14-6 rout of Stony Brook in the first game of the March 10 doubleheader and concluded with a 3-2 victory in game one of the March 25 twinbill against Bryant.
  • The team outscored its opponents 83-34 over the nine-game span while producing 17 doubles, three triples, nine home runs  and 72 RBIs, 13 of which coming from sophomore Freddy Sabido and senior Anthony Godino.
  • Junior Phil Capra led the way, batting a robust .387 (12-for-31), which included four home runs, a slugging percentage of .806 and an on-base of .556.
  • On the mound, the Green & White pitched to 3.49 ERA over 80 innings of work.
  • The Seahawk arms limited opponents to just a .230 batting average while striking out 64 batters and yielded just 34 walks (1.88:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio).
  • Sophomore Nick Robino, who earned inclusion on the Week 6 #NECPrimePeformer List, appeared in six games for the Seahawks during the win streak, posting a 2.53 ERA while going 1-0 and earning two saves in 10.2 innings. The second-year right-hander struck out 12 men while allowing just three walks (4:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio).
 
 

NEXT UP FOR WAGNER:
  • The Seahawks will resume NEC play this weekend, with three, single-game contests against Sacred Heart, beginning on Thursday, March 29 and concluding on Saturday, March 31.
  • Wagner and the Pioneers will be playing this series in New Britain, CT, at the CCSU Baseball Field on the campus of Central Connecticut.
