Box Score / Box Score (PDF) / Watch Replay

Jamaica, NY -
Trailing 14-4 after five innings, Wagner erupted for 18 runs over the next three frames en route to posting a 22-16 come-from-behind victory over St. John's at Jack Kaiser Stadium in a game that was streamed nationally through ESPN3. With their fifth-straight victory, the Seahawks improve to 9-14 while the defending NCAA Super Regional participant Red Storm falls to12-16.

Wagner batted around in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to fuel their 22-run performance, which is the best by the Seahawks since a 22-8 win over Manhattan in 1991.

In winning at St. John's for the first time since April 11, 1978, Wagner improves 2-24, all-time, when playing in Jamaica while also snapping a 14-game road losing streak to the Red Storm.

Seven different Seahawk players recorded at least three hits, led by junior Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan), who went 4-for-5 with four RBI, three runs, two stolen bases and two walks while extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

Freshman RHP Nathan Hunt (Kirtland, OH / Hawken School) allowed just one runs over 2.2 innings of work to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the year.

Wagner opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) led off with a single to left field, before moving to second on a ground out. Alfano would then come around to score when freshman Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ / West-Windsor Plainsboro South) ripped a single up the middle. Graduate student Chase Gray (Toms River, NJ / Toms River South / Seton Hall) extended the lead out to 2-0 with a two-out double to deep right field that scored Ruta all the way from first.

St. John's rallied in the bottom part of the frame with five runs while sending 10 batters to the plate. However, the damage could have been worse as reliever Max Schmardel (So., Eatontown, NJ / Monmouth Regional) entered to a bases loaded, no-out situation and promptly induced a double play grounder, before striking out Danny Bethea with runners on the corner to evade further trouble.

After the Red Storm extended the lead to 7-2 with a pair of runs, the Seahawks answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning using three hits. Nick Dini (So., Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) led off with a bunt single, before Alfano reached for the third-straight time with a walk. Junior Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Seneca / Burlington CC) then loaded up the bases with a single. Following a fielder's choice, Tommy Mazurkieiwicz (So., Neshanic Station, NJ / Somerville) plated Alfano with a RBI single, before Gray chased home Flynn with a sacrifice fly.

St. John's then pushed the lead out to what appeared to be an insurmountable 14-4 margin with seven runs in the bottom part of the frame.

However, Wagner rallied in the top of the sixth inning for seven runs of its own. Miller reached via an error, before moving to second on a Dini single. Alfano followed with a single to load up the bases. Flynn then delivered a two-run single that scored Miller and Dini, before Ruta followed with a double that chased home Alfano while moving Flynn to third. Mazurkiewicz then hit a two-run single, scoring Ruta and Flynn. One batter later, pinch hitter Vaughn Champion (Galloway, NJ / Absegami) delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Mazurkiewicz. Miller then capped the scoring with a RBI single to bring around Gray, who earlier walked, while trimming the deficit to 14-11.

After Hunt notched a 1-2-3 frame in the bottom of the sixth, the Seahawks again batted around in the top of the seventh. Wagner drew to 14-12 on a Ruta single up the middle that scored Alfano. Mazurkiewicz then doubled, plating Flynn while moving Ruta to third. St. John's reliever Anthony Cervone retired the next two batters, before Miller picked up his teammates with a two-run single that brought around Ruta and Mazurkiewicz to complete the Seahawks' comeback while giving the visitors a 15-14 lead. Miller would later come around to score on a throwing error, capping the five-run frame while making it a 16-14 game.

After the Red Storm cut it to 16-15 with a single tally in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Green & White put the game on ice with six runs in the top of the eighth inning while batting around for the third-straight inning.

Dini matched Miller with a team-high four hits while Alfano scored a game and career-best five runs and Mazurkiewicz drove in a game and career-best five runs.

Martin Kelly led the defending Big East Champions at the plate with three hits. Cervone (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, over 1.0 inning of work.

Wagner, which outhit St. John's 22-17, returns to action against Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, April 5 at 3:00 pm.
