Staten Island, NY – After playing three consecutive road games, the Wagner men's lacrosse team kicks off Northeast Conference (NEC) play in the first of four straight home contests, vs. Hobart on Saturday, March 17 in a 1:00 p.m. faceoff at Hameline Field.
The Seahawks and the Statesmen enter Saturday's play with matching 2-4 records. Wagner has split its last two games, earning a 9-8 win at VMI (3/6) before falling by an 11-3 count at Quinnipiac (3/10).
After dropping its first three games of the season, Hobart has won two of its last three, with victories over Binghamton (17-6) and Colgate (12-11), followed by a competitive 12-9 defeat at No. 16 Georgetown.
The Seahawks are led in scoring by their trio of starting attackmen in senior
Andrew Streilein, who leads the way with 17 points (9g, 8a), followed by sophomore
Nic Ancona's 12 points (10g, 2a), while junior
John Norton checks in with nine points (9g).
Senior defenseman
Andrew Park paces the Green & White in both ground balls (22) and caused turnovers (14), with a 2.33 CTs per game average, which ranks No. 8 in the nation. In the faceoff department, the lion share has been taken by freshman midfielder
Hank Ontiveros (31-of-60-.517) and sophomore midfielder
Nick Warren (23-of-56-.411).
Junior
Matt Sefcik ranks in the top five nationally with an average of 14.17 saves per game (No. 2), and a .607 save percentage (No. 5) on a total of 85 saves. including a 9.32 goals against average (No. 25).
Team-wise, the Seahawks lead the nation in man-down defense (0.909), while ranking No. 3 in saves per game (14.17), and No. 15 in caused turnovers per game (7.83).
Following Saturday's contest with Hobart, the Seahawks will host the Hampton University Pirates on Monday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m., in a game that has been moved up from Tuesday due to expected inclement weather.
