BASEBALL KICKS OFF FINAL HOMESTAND OF 2016 WITH A DOUBLEHEADER ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON...
  • This weekend's Northeast Conference (NEC) series between the Wagner baseball team and Sacred Heart has had a schedule change due to inclement weather in Friday's forecast.
  • The two teams will now play a doubleheader, consisting of one nine-inning game, followed by one seven-inning game, on Thursday, May 12 with game one set for 2:00 p.m. The rest of the series schedule is TBD due to potential inclement weather.

QUICK RECAP...
  • Wagner concluded the non-conference portion of its 2016 schedule with a 4-2 win Mother's Day road win over the Marist Red Foxes.
  • Senior RF Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) was instrumental in the victory, going 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs while junior SS Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Sophomore LF Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) was the lone Seahawk with two hits and also drove in a run.
  • Senior LHP Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) threw six innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out three in earning the win (3-4).  Classmate Nathan Hunt (Kirtland, OH/Hawken School) pitched three scoreless innings of two-hit ball, striking out three batters, for his third save of the season.
  • Joey Aiola led the Red Foxes at the plate with a 3-for-3 showing while Andrew Rouse and Frank Gregoire drove in Marist's only runs of the contest.   Mike Coss took the loss, dropping him to 0-5 on the season after he threw seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out five.
  • Marist got the scoring going in the bottom of the first as Rouse doubled to left center, scoring Graham McIntire from second. After a bunt single from Tyler Kirkpatrick, Gregoire sent a sacrifice fly to center, plating Rouse.
  • Wagner cut the deficit in half in the top of the third inning. After Mascelli was hit by a pitch, Ruta grounded out to second, scoring Cala from third as the visitors trailed 2-1.
  • The Seahawks knotted the score at 2-2 in the fifth. With two outs and a runner on third base, Ruta hit a shot to first and beat out the throw, allowing sophomore 3B Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School) to cross the plate.
  • After a scoreless sixth, Wagner took the lead at 3-2 in the seventh as Mascelli singled back up the middle, scoring Cala from third base. The Green & White tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Cala, scoring freshman 1B Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic).

SERIES HISTORY...
  • Wagner and Sacred Heart have met 60 times in their history with the Pioneers holding a 35-25 edge in the head-to-head series.
  • Last season, Wagner was 2-3 against the eventual NEC champions, splitting the regular season matchups before falling on Day One of the 2015 NEC Tournament.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS:
  • This weekend's series against Wagner marks the final road conference series for the defending 2015 league champions.
  • For the third consecutive game a big inning, this time a four-run third, provided more than enough run support for the pitching staff, as John Sostarich's six scoreless frames highlighted Sacred Heart's ninth shutout of the season and clinched the Pioneers eighth straight Northeast Conference Tournament appearance with an 8-0 blanking of Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.
  • Victor Sorrento leads the Pioneers with a .322 batting average (56-for-174) and a team-best 38 RBIs.
  • Dan Schock has launced a team-leading six homeruns and driven in 24 RBIs.
  • On the hill, Sacred Heart's hurlers are pitching to a 3.82 ERA.
  • Both James Taubl and James Cooksey lead the squad with five wins while Cooksey has recorded three saves on the season.

SEAHAWK TRIO CLIMBING CAREER HITS LIST...
  • Senior outfielders Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) and Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) along with junior SS Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) are rapidly ascending on Wagner's all-time hits list.
  • Through 5/8/16, Mascelli stands with 183 career hits, five short of tying Gil Barkman ('00) for 10th all-time. Ruta enters the weekend with 155 hits, goood for 19th all-time and needs just five hits to surpass both Pete DiStefano ('97; 157) and Jon Lucas ('11; 158).
  • Meanwhile, Nicosia ranks 43rd all-time with 118 hits.
