SEAHAWKS RESUME NORTHEAST CONFERENCE PLAY; TRAVELS TO LEAGUE-LEADERS BRYANT FOR A FOUR-GAME SET:
  • The Wagner baseball team, fresh off of Wednesday's 13-6 victory over Saint Peter's, will look to make it two in a row as Northeast Conference (NEC) play resumes this weekend when the Seahawks travel to Smithfield, RI to meet the first-place Bryant Bulldogs in a four-game series.

ALL-TIME SERIES WITH THE BRYANT UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS:
  • All-time, Bryant leads the head-to-head matchup, 19-7-0.
  • Last season, these two schools split the regular season meetings (2-2), but the Bulldogs eliminated the Seahawks in the NEC Tournament on May 22, 4-2, at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT.
  • Over the last ten meetings, Wagner is 4-6 against the Bulldogs and hold an all-time record of 3-9 in Smithfield, RI.

ON DECK FOR WAGNER:
  • After this weekend's road trip, Wagner embarks on a 10-game homestand, beginning on Wednesday, April 20, as the Seahawks take on former head coach Joe Litterio and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
  • First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER:
  • After being held without a hit over the first three innings, the Wagner bats woke up in a big way as the Seahawks stopped an eight-game losing streak by defeating the Saint Peter University Peacocks, 13-6, on Wednesday afternoon at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
  • In banging out 14 base hits over the final five innings, Wagner improved to 10-18 overall on the season while the Peacocks fell to 5-23 on the year.
  • Senior RF Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) and sophomore 2B Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) paced the Green & White with three hits apiece with Ruta driving in a game-high 3 RBIs and Brey scoring three runs.
  • Freshman DH Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) added two RBIs, and a run scored, while senior CF Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) and sophomore 3B Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) each had two hits. Nicosia, Mazzio and junior SS Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) each drove in a run as well.
  • Senior LHP reliever Nick DiLeo (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier [St. John's]) earned his first victory of the season, tossing three innings of one-hit ball, allowing just a run and a walk while striking out three.  Junior RHP Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) made his season debut, going two innings, allowing two runs and walking two over the eight batters he faced.
  • The Seahawk bullpen, collectively, went seven innings, giving up seven hits, four runs, two of which were earned, walked two and struck out six batters.

TABLE SETTERS:
  • In Wednesday's 13-6 victory over Saint Peter's, leadoff hitter, junior shortstop Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), and senior CF Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) combined to bat .333 (3-for-9) with four runs scored and two RBIs.

WELCOME BACK, DANNY:
  • Wednesday afternoon marked the return of junior right hander, Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township).
  • Marsh made his season debut vs. Saint Peter's after missing the majority of last year, and the first part of this season, due to injury.
  • The third-year Seahawk pitched two innings, giving up a couple of hits, two unearned runs and walked two

FARING WELL AGAINST THE LEFTIES:
  • Through the first 28 games of the 2016 season, the Seahawks have hit left-handed pitching well, posting a .320 overall batting average.

BOMBS AWAY:
  • Against LIU Brooklyn back on April 8, sophomore outfielder Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) belted his first career multi-home run game.
  • Cala homered down the right field line in the top of the second.
  • In Wagner's half of the fourth, Cala sent a no-doubter over the left field wall after running the count to a favorable 2-0.
  • As a team, Wagner has hit 13 home runs on the season, ranking third in the Northeast Conference (NEC).

TOP OF THE NEC:
  • Through April 12, Wagner leads the conference in batting average (.296) and hits (271) while ranking second in on-base percentage (.364) and scoring (5.3 runs per game).

MASCELLI CONTINUES TO HIT:
  • Despite missing the LIU Brooklyn series, Mascelli picked off where he left off as one of the nation's leading hitters.
  • The third-year Seahawk is batting .412 on the season, ranking him among the top-20 batters in the NCAA (14th through games played April 12).
  • Mascelli, who currently holds a four-game hitting streak, started the year with a seven-game hit streak.

AWESOME AUSTIN:
  • Junior RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) has already set a career high in starts (7) while lowering his ERA in the process.
  • Last year, the 6-5 Garden State native pitched to the tune of a 1-3 record and 5.24 ERA.
  • This season, in those seven starts, Goeke is 3-2 with a 2.50 ERA, which ranks sixth in the NEC.
  • Additionally, Goeke has a career-best 42 strikeouts this season, which is third in the league

SACRIFICING FOR THE GREATER GOOD:
  • Senior outfielder Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) enters Wednesday with 17 career sacrifices, which is good for third all-time in Wagner history.
  • The veteran outfielder needs just four more sacrifices to tie Chris Smith ('14) for second with 21 and 11 more to tie the all-time leader, Damian Csakai ('10), who finished his career with 27.

MASCELLI & RUTA CLIMBING CAREER HITS LIST:
  • Junior SS Nick Mascelli and senior outfielder Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) are racking up the hits and rapidly approaching the 200-hit milestone.
  • Mascelli enters the weekend series with Bryant with 158 career hits, which is tied for 17th all-time in Wagner history with Jon Lucas ('11).
  • Ruta, who went 3-for-5 against Saint Peter's, has 141 career hits, which puts him alone in 25th place.
