Newark, NJ – The Wagner baseball team was held to just two hits on the afternoon as the NJIT Highlanders took the final game of the four-game series, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 16-14-1 while the Highlanders improve to 17-13-1.

Junior left-hander Paul Mammino (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) suffered the hard-luck defeat as he falls to 0-2 on the season despite throwing 5.1 innings, allowing just four hits, one earned run while striking out four Highlanders. His counterpart, Johnny Malatesta, retired the first 23 batters he faced in throwing 8.0 innings of two-hit ball while striking out two and earning his fourth win of the season. Closer John Saviano picked up his second save of the year after pitching a scoreless ninth.

NJIT scored first in the bottom half of the fourth inning. After Mike Rampone doubled to left center, advancing Ed Charlton to third, Stephan Halibej grounded out to freshman 3B Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]), allowing Charlton to score on the play and give NJIT a 1-0 lead.

The Highlanders extended its lead to 3-0 after Matt McKinnon doubled down the right field line to score both Evan Pietronico and Halibej. With two-men out in the top of the top of the eighth, freshman Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) singled to left field, ending Malatesta's bid for perfection and wound up on second base after a wild pitch. Sophomore Brendan Benecke (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) singled to left center as Godino hurried around from second base to score the lone Seahawk run of the day.  NJIT added a run in the bottom half of the stanza to earn a split in the series (2-2).

The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday, April 21 as they head to Piscataway, NJ to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. These two teams met back on April 7 as the Seahawks scored 10 runs in the top of the eighth to earn an 11-4, come-from-behind victory over the Big 10 school.
