Men’s Lacrosse Plays VMI In First Road Test Tonight At 7:00 PM

Lexington, VA – Coming off of a season-opening stretch of five home games, with the last two resulting in excruciating one-goal defeats to Detroit and Vermont, respectively, the 1-4 Wagner men's lacrosse team will play its first road game of 2014 when the Seahawks meet VMI tonight at 7:00 pm.

In VMI, the Seahawks will be facing a team that enters tonight's play with a 1-7 record with the Keydets' lone victory coming by a 6-4 count over Air Force at home on March 2. 

After opening the season with a 20-5 loss to Rutgers on February 18, Wagner recorded an epic 7-6 four-overtime victory over Monmouth, which ended with sophomore Paul DeVita's 10-yard blast off an assist from classmate Griffen LeClaire (White Rock, British Columbia / Toronto, Hill Academy).

On March 1, Wagner dropped a 12-8 decision to Saint Joseph's, which was followed by a 9-8 loss to Detroit on March 8 and, most recently, an 11-10, double-overtime defeat to Vermont on March 15.

Much-improved in virtually every statistical category over last season, the Green & White lead the nation with an average of 12.80 caused turnovers per game. Individually, sophomore Daniel Valencia (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) ranks No. 5 nationally at 2.60 caused turnovers per game, while junior Matt Bunting (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) ranks No. 16 at 2.00 caused turnovers per game.

Redshirt-freshman William McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) has won 55-of-104 faceoffs (.529) and his average of 8.60 faceoffs per game rank No. 16 nationally. On March 3, the gritty 5-5, 155-pound McMenamin was instrumental in the win over Monmouth, winning an impressive15-of-17 faceoffs for a winning percentage of .882, while collecting an eye-opening 13 ground balls.

Griffen LeClaire is the team-leader in points with 13 on five goals and a team-high eight assists, while redshirt-freshman Patrick McMenamin, John's twin brother, is second in scoring with 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists). DeVita is third with nine points (team-high eight goals, one assist).

In goal, senior Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) has recorded 48 saves and sports a goals against average of 10.68 in 292:15 of action between the pipes.
