Staten Island, NY – Detroit's Mike Birney deposited a 22-yard blast with 0.8 seconds left to play to hand Wagner a heartbreaking 9-8 loss in men's lacrosse action at Hameline Field today.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-3 on the season while the Titans even their record at 3-3. The Seahawks conclude their five-game, season-opening home stretch by hosting Vermont on Saturday, March 15 at 1:00 pm.

Redshirt freshman midfielder William McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), the reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week, scored his second goal of the game with 1:52 left to play tie the game 8-8.

When the Titans were penalized for slashing with 45 seconds to go, the Seahawks had a chance to win the game on an extra-man opportunity. But Detroit goalie Jason Weber gloved his 18th save of the game with 30 seconds to play. Detroit then quickly worked the ball upfield. With the seconds ticking down and the game appearing to be headed to overtime, Birney unleashed his game-winning shot.

The Seahawks battled back from an early 3-1 deficit with four straight goals to seize a 5-3 halftime lead. The goal-scorers during this four-goal Seahawk blitz were sophomore midfielder Paul DeVita (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), senior midfielder Matthew Shute (Suffield, CT/Suffield), sophomore attack Griffen LeClaire (White Rock, BC/Toronto, Hill Academy), and William McMenamin.

The score remained 5-3 until midway through the third quarter when the Titans went on a 4-0 run of their own over a 6:38 span in seizing a 7-5 lead. With 12:41 left to play, DeVita buried an unassisted goal to make it a 7-6 game. After Detroit's Scott Drummond made it 8-6 at the 11:08 mark, junior midfielder Michael McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St.  Augustine Prep) notched a goal off of a Griffen LeClaire assist to make it 8-7 with 5:49 left.

Detroit maintained this one-goal lead until William McMenamin received a pass from junior defenseman Matt Bunting (Ramapo, NJ/Wyckoff) and deposited a 10-yard shot to knot the game at 8-8.

Wagner held the advantage in every statistical category, out-shooting Detroit 45-29, leading in ground bals, 34-30, while winning 12-of-21 faceoffs, all of which were taken by William McMenamin who finished with a game-high 12 ground balls.

In addition to William McMenamin's two tallies, DeVita ended up with two goals on the afternoon. Griffen LeClaire had one goal and two assists. Adding one goal apiece were junior midfielder Cory Santor (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury), Shute and Michael McMenamin.

Alex Maini paced Detroit with five points on four goals and one assist while Drummond added two goals and two assists.
