Men’s Lacrosse Drops 11-10 Contest To Vermont In Double-Overtime

Staten Island, NY – William McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and David DeCirce (Clarence, NY/Clarence) scored two goals apiece but Vermont overcame an 8-3 deficit in posting an 11-10, two-overtime victory over the Seahawks in men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Hameline Field.

On the heels of a -second last9-8 loss to Detroit on March 8, the hard-luck Seahawks fall to 1-4 on the season while Vermont improves to 4-3.

Wagner jumped out to early leads of 2-0 and 4-1 in this one. Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) tallied an unassisted goal at 10:22 of the first quarter, followed by a Reed LeClaire (White Rock, British Columbia / Toronto, Hill Academy) goal at 7:29. After Vermont's Ian McKay buried an unassisted tally at 1:55, the Seahawks scored a pair of goals in the final 42 seconds of the opening quarter, one by Adam Geiger off a Cory Santor (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury)feed, and the other by William McMenamin, to take a 4-1 lead after one period.

William McMenamin made it a 3-0 run and a 5-1 lead when he stuffed home a shot off of a Griffen LeClaire (White Rock, British Columbia / Toronto, Hill Academy) assist. After the Catamounts notched a pair of goals to make it 5-3, Wagner closed the half on goals by Griffen LeClaire and DeCirce, the latter off a pass from Paul DeVita (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) to take a 7-3 lead at intermission.

After Santor rattled home an unassisted goal 1:40 into the second half to give Wagner its biggest lead at 8-3, Vermont stormed back with five straight goals, spanning the third and fourth quarters, tying the game at 8-8 with 14:35 to play. After Matthew Shute (Suffield, CT/Suffield) knocked home an unassisted tally at 13:07 to put Wagner on top 9-8, the Catamounts responded with a 2-0 run, the latter an unassisted goal by Patrick Clark which gave Vermont a 10-9 lead with 3:50 to play.

On its final possession, with the regulation time ticking down, Patrick McMenamin delivered a pass from behind the goal to DeCirce who launched a point-blank shot from straight-on-goal with one second left to play to tie the game at 10-10 and force regulation.

With 1:33 remaining in the first overtime session, Wagner appeared to have won the game when William McMenamin sank a goal from in close but the score was waved off when McMenamin was whistled for being in the crease.

The score remained tied at 10-10 until MacKay scored his game-winner, with 1:45 left in the second overtime, which was his third goal of the game. Teammate Patrick Clark also recorded a hat trick, while adding two assists in finishing with a game-high five points.

Statistically, this matchup was as close as the final score would indicate as Vermont held a 43-42 edge in shots and led in ground balls, 29-28. The Catamounts also held a slim advantage in faceoffs, winning 13-of-25. William McMenamin took all 25 faceoffs for Wagner, winning 12, while collecting a team-high six ground balls.

Also scoring goals for the Seahawks were Griffen LeClaire, Reed LeClaire, Santor, Adam Geiger (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck), Shute, and Patrick McMenamin.

Ian MacKay scored three goals, including the game-winner, for Vermont, which came with 1:45 left in the second overtime. Teammate Patrick Clark also recorded a hat trick, while adding two assists, finishing with a game-high five points.

Senior Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) registered 18 saves in goal while Justin Rosenberg had 15 saves for Vermont.

Today's game capped a season-opening stretch of five consecutive home games for the Seahawks who now travel south for a pair of Spring Break road tests. On Tuesday, March 18, the Green & White will face off vs. VMI on the Keydets' Lexington, VA campus at 7:00 pm. Wagner concludes its two-game southern swing by playing at the University of Richmond on Friday, March 21 in a 7:00 pm contest.
