Box Score / Box Score (PDF) / Brown Program Graphic / Senior Day Gallery

Staten Island, NY -
Sacred Heart broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, before adding three more in the top of the sixth inning en route to a 7-4 win over Wagner in the series finale between the teams at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

The Seahawks fall to 21-30 and 14-14 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Pioneers improve to 19-29 and 16-12 in the league. In the race for one of the four playoff spots, the Green & White are one game back of Central Connecticut State and two back of SHU with four to play. Monmouth has secured a playoff spot, while Fairleigh Dickinson has a magic number of one to clinch a berth.

Sophomore RHP Nick Pavia (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph By The Sea) was sharp in the early going, yielding just two hits while facing one over the minimum through four innings. Unfortunately, Sacred Heart RHP Kody Kerski matched Pavia over the first four frames, scattering two hits while also facing just one over the minimum.

The Pioneers broke through with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, before adding three more in the sixth.

Wagner finally dented the scoreboard in the bottom part of sixth. Freshman Jason Gordon (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) led off with a walk, before Chris Smith (Tampa, FL / Freedom / Ellsworth (IA) CC) and sophomore Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) each singled to load up the bases with no outs. Junior Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) plated the first Seahawk run of the afternoon with a bases-loaded walk, before senior Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen) / Seton Hall) cut the deficit to 7-2 with a sacrifice fly.

After freshman reliever RHP Max Schmardel (Eatontown, NJ / Monmouth Regional) stranded a runner at third, the Green & White plated two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Miller deposited a two-out, two-run single to right field, plating junior Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) and Smith to trim the deficit to 7-4.

Unfortunately, that would be as close as Wagner would get as SHU reliever LHP Nick Leiningen recorded the final six outs of the game for his first save.

Miller, who extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games, led the way on offense with his team-leading 23rd multi-hit game of the year while finishing up 2-for-4 with two RBI and his NEC-leading 32nd steal of the year. Gordon reached base safely three times in going 2-for-3 with a run and a walk. Smith rounded out the multi-hit performers, going 2-for-4 with two-runs and a stolen base.

Schmardel was outstanding in relief, striking out two while scattering three hits over 3.1 innings of work. Pavia (2-6) assumed the loss, yielding four runs on six hits and a walk with one strikeout over 4.2 innings.

Troy Scribner went 3-for-5 with a run to lead a 12-hit Sacred Heart attack, while Billy McDonough was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Wagner travels to NJIT on Tuesday, May 8 with first pitch slated for 7:00 pm.
