Teaneck, NJ - Fairleigh Dickinson shut out Wagner 4-0 in the first game of today's doubleheader at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. In victory, the Knights improve to 12-14-1 and 8-6 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Seahawks fall to 12-19 and 8-6 in the league.
Wagner threatened in the top of the first when sophomore
Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) drew a leadoff walk. However, after stealing second he was thrown out trying to steal third.
After again stranding a runner on the bases in the top of the second, Fairleigh Dickinson jumped out in front with a second-inning run. Eric Anderson led off with a double to right center, before coming around to score on Kyle Weeks' RBI double down the left field line. Sophomore RHP
Ryan Casey (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) evaded further damage with a strikeout of Shane Siebler to strand runners at the corner.
The Knights pushed the lead out to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning on an Anderson three-run round-tripper to right field.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Seahawks would again threaten as senior
Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen) / Seton Hall) drew a walk, before freshman
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) singled through the left side. Following a strikeout, Brown and Dini executed a successful double steal, but would each be left stranded in scoring position as FDU RHP Joe Borelli induced a pop out and a fly out to quell the rally.
After allowing three runs in the third, Casey settled down and retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced, yielding just a one-out bloop single to Ryan Kresky in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Unfortunately, the Green & White offense was unable to generate any offense, failing to dent the scoreboard despite having runners on board in each of the first six frames.
Dini notched the only Wagner hit of the game while extending his hitting streak to 11.
In defeat, Casey (3-2) was solid in twirling his third complete game in four league contests, striking out five while allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over 6.0 innings.
Borelli (2-0) earned the win, striking out three while scattering one hit and five walks over 7.0 innings.
