Staten Island, NY -
Wagner split today's doubleheader with LIU Brooklyn, winning game one 3-2 in 10 innings, before falling in game two by a 16-1 count at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Seahawks are now 14-23 and 10-9 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) and will look to capture the series tomorrow, while the Blackbirds move to 14-22 and 6-9 in the league.

The Green & White captured game one on freshman Jason Gordon's (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) walk-off, base-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning, capping a thrilling opening game.

Freshman RHP Anthony Battaglia (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph By The Sea) earned the win, hurling 3.2 innings of scoreless relief in improving to 2-1.

Wagner struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, sophomore Ian Miller (Downingtown, PA / Bishop Shanahan) got things started with a drag bunt down the first base line. Graduate student Bill Murphy (Cranford, NJ / Roselle Catholic / Rutgers) followed with a ground rule double to left field, moving Miller to third. Senior Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen) / Seton Hall) picked the pair up, lacing a two-run double down the right field line, scoring Miller and Murphy.

LIU Brooklyn then mounted its first big threat of the game in the bottom part of the frame. With one out and Tyler Jones on first, Staten Island native Drew Walsh singled through the right side. After the pair moved to second-and-third on a fly out, sophomore RHP Ryan Casey (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) induced an inning-ending ground out to quell the rally.

The Blackbirds again rallied in the top of the fifth as Chris Untereiner crushed a one-out double to deep center field. However, as was the case in the previous inning, Casey coaxed the final two outs with relative ease to end the threat.

LIU Brooklyn finally got to Casey with a pair of two-out runs of its own in the top of the sixth inning while tying the game up at 2-2.

Freshman Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) opened the bottom part of the frame with a line-drive single to right field while extending hitting streak to 16 games. After moving to second, Dini was left stranded while beginning a troubling trend for the Seahawk nine.

In each of the next three frames, the Green & White would strand the winning run just 90 feet from home, including squandering two bases-loaded, one-out situations.

Wagner, however, managed to stay in the game thanks to some outstanding pitching from Battaglia. After entering the top of the seventh with one out and a runner on third, the Staten Island native induced a pair of pop outs to send the game into extras.

In the top of the eighth inning, Battaglia worked around a couple of walks to keep the game knotted up at 2-2.

After working a 1-2-3 ninth, Battaglia ran into his toughest situation of the day in the top of the 10th. With one out, LIU Brooklyn rapped three-straight hits to load the bases. He then rose to the challenge, getting Mike Garcia to pop out on a full-count offering, before inducing Derek Stupski into an inning-ending ground out.

The Seahawks then finally broke through in the bottom of the 10th inning. Junior Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) reached second base on a two-base throwing error on his dribbler back to the pitcher.  After moving to third on a wild pitch, the Blackbirds elected to walk the bases full for Gordon, who made visitors pay with a bloop single to left field for the game-winner.

Gordon and Miller each had two hits, leading the way for the Green & White. LIU Brooklyn, which matched Wagner with 10 hits, was led by Walsh, who finished up 3-for-4.

Blackbird RHP Tito Marrero (1-1) took the loss, yielding one run on three hits over 3.1 innings of work.

LIU Brooklyn erupted for 16 runs on 18 hits in taking the nightcap by a 16-1 score. Seven different players recorded multiple-hits, led by Mike Garcia, who went 3-for-5 with a home run, double and five RBI.

Sophomore Cliff Brantley (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond) drove in the lone Wagner run with a RBI triple in the seventh inning.

Blackbird LHP Chance Fuglistahler (3-2) earned the win, striking out six while scattering two hits in a complete-game 7.0-inning effort. Junior RHP Dakota Dvorak (Pompano Beach, FL / North Broward Prep) fell to 1-6 in defeat, yielding seven runs over 3.0 innings.

The teams will conclude their series tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
