Emmitsburg, MD - Wagner dropped the series finale to Mount St. Mary's 6-4, despite outhitting the Mountaineers by a 14-7 count at E.T. Straw Family Stadium. The Seahawks fall to 11-17 and 7-5 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while MSM improves to 9-21 and 2-10 in the league.
The Green & White recorded at least one hit in all nine innings en route to a season-best 14 as all nine regulars hit safely for just the second time this season, but stranded 12 runners, including seven in scoring position.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an unearned run.
Wagner claimed its first lead of the day in the top of the third inning, using a pair of two-out hits. Sophomore
Ian Miller (Downington, PA / Bishop Shanahan) got things started with
this one-out infield single, before moving to second on a balk. Following a ground out that moved Miller to third, senior
Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen) / Seton Hall) picked up his starting centerfielder with
this run-scoring double. Freshman
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) followed with
this single to right field, scoring Brown while giving the Seahawks a 2-1 lead.
The Green & White pushed the lead out to 3-1 in the top of the fourth with a single run. With one out, senior
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) collected his second hit of the game, before junior
Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) followed with a single of his own. Freshman
Jason Gordon (Baltimore, MD / Archbishop Curley) then made it 3-1
with this RBI single through the right side, scoring Higgins. The damage could have been much greater, but Mountaineer pitcher RHP Thomas Williams induced an inning-ending double-play grounder with the bases loaded.
MSM rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, before retaking the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Wagner got one of those runs back in the top of the seventh while cutting the deficit to 5-4
on this single off the bat of
Cliff Brantley (So., Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond) that scored graduate student
Bill Murphy (Cranford, NJ / Roselle Catholic / Rutgers).
Mount St. Mary's immediately got that run back in the bottom part of the frame in extending their lead out to 6-4.
Unfortunately, the Seahawks would be unable to further dent the scoreboard as the Green & White stranded runners in the eighth and ninth innings.
Gordon led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a RBI while playing his first collegiate game in his home state of Maryland. Also recording multiple-hits were Dini (2-for-5, RBI), junior
Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) (2-for-5) and Higgins (2-for-4, run). Dini has now hit safely in eight-straight games and 14-of-15, while Keel recorded his team-best matching seven multi-hit games to go along with his team-leading six multi-RBI games.
For the Mountaineers, Andrew Clow went 3-for-4 with two runs while Josh Winter finished up 2-for-4 with a run.
Freshman RHP
Dan Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell) had a solid outing, recording career-highs in strikeouts (6) and innings pitched (7.0), but yielded six runs, four earned, on seven hits and three walks in falling to 1-3.
Williams (2-1) earned the win, despite allowing four runs on 12 hits and one walk over 6.2 innings of work. RHP Nick Riley collected his second save with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Wagner hosts St. John's on Tuesday, April 3 at 3:30 pm.
