Mount St. Mary's Bests Wagner 9-3 In Game One

Box Score / Box Score (PDF)

Emmitsburg, MD -
Mount St. Mary's defeated Wagner 9-3 in the first game of today's doubleheader at E.T. Straw Family Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 8-21 and 1-10 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Seahawks fall to 11-16 and 7-4 in the league.

Pitching before a bevy of scouts, MSM starting pitcher RHP Brady Feigl (1-2) earned the win, striking out two while yielding two runs on six hits and a walk over 6.0 innings of work.

Jay Knight opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning before Mount St. Mary's struck for four unearned runs in the bottom of the third.

The Mountaineers extended the lead out to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs before the Green & White mounted its first major threat of the game in the top of the fifth.

Junior Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) and senior Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) each singled to lead off the frame. However, the pair would be unable to advance any further as Feigl induced a pop out, before junior Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) hit a scorching line drive that the third baseman was able to snare, before doubling up Keel at second.

After MSM added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, Wagner finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, graduate student Bill Murphy (Cranford, NJ / Roselle Catholic / Rutgers) delivered this single through the right side, before moving to third on a throwing error. Senior Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen) / Seton Hall) followed with this sacrifice fly to make it 9-1. Senior Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame) then doubled down the left field line, before scoring on a single off the bat of freshman Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) single. Dini's base knock extended his hitting streak to seven games as the Garden State native has now batted safely in 13 of his last 14 games.

The Seahawks would add a run in the top of the seventh on an Ian Miller (So., Downington, PA / Bishop Shanahan) fielder's choice grounder that plated Alfano while providing the final 9-3 score.

Ryan Owens went 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs and two RBI while Knight was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBI to lead Mount St. Mary's, which outhit the Green & White 12-6.

Junior RHP Dakota Dvorak (Pompano Beach, FL / North Broward Prep) assumed the loss and fell to 1-5 on the year, allowing seven runs, three earned, on eight hits and one walk over 3.0 innings.
