Emmitsburg, MD - Wagner scored three runs in the top of the 10th en route to a 9-6 win over Mount St. Mary's in the first game of today's doubleheader at the ET Straw Family Stadium. The Seahawks improve to 10-15 and 6-3 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Mountaineers fall to 7-20 and 0-9 in the league.
The Green & White were aided by four MSM errors that led to five unearned runs, while scoring six of its nine runs with two outs.
Wagner wasted no time in grabbing a lead, plating three first-inning runs.
Ian Miller (Downington, PA / Bishop Shanahan) doubled on the first pitch of the game before moving to third when
Bill Murphy reached on a fielding error. Senior
Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen) / Seton Hall) opened the scoring
with this sacrifice fly to center, scoring Miller. Following an out, freshman
Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) then reached via an error, advancing to second on the throw while pushing Murphy to third. Junior
Jayson Keel (Starkville, MS / Starkville / Holmes CC) capped the scoring
with this two-run single to left center, plating Murphy and Dini in opening up a 3-0 lead.
Mount St. Mary's got on the board in the bottom part of the frame on a Mark Quaranta solo home run, his third of the year.
The Seahawks added to the lead with two more unearned runs in the top of the third. Murphy reached via an error, leading off the frame, before Brown
smoked this single to left field. Following a
Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame) sacrifice bunt, Dini scored Murphy with a RBI ground out while moving Brown to third. Keel then collected his third RBI of the game with this infield single, extending the lead out to 5-1.
The Mountaineers got one of those runs back in the bottom part of the frame on Jay Knight's first home run of the year, trimming the lead to 5-2.
MSM cut the Green & White advantage to 5-3 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. Sam Nott doubled with one out, before moving to third on a failed pickoff attempt and would score on a Mo Moriarty sacrifice fly.
The Mountaineers would continue to fight and would tie the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning, using of RBI singles from Michael Foster and Josh Winter.
Wagner would reclaim the lead at 6-5 in the top of the seventh inning when Brown scored from third on a wild pitch.
Mount St. Mary's would immediately tie the game up on a Winter sacrifice fly in the bottom part of the frame.
After a scoreless eighth inning, both teams would threaten in the ninth. The Seahawks loaded up the bases before Dan Horner exited the jam with a strikeout. Brandon Scott led off the bottom part of the frame with a single before moving to third with two outs. Freshman
Anthony Battaglia (Staten Island, NY / St. Joseph By The Sea) rose to the challenge with
this stirkeout of Winter, to send the game to extra innings.
The Green & White again loaded the base in the 10th before Dini broke the tie with a two-out, bases-loaded walk that forced in junior
Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep), who had led off the inning with a single. Keel picked up his second two-run, two-out single of the game
with this bloop shot to right field, scoring Murphy and Brown while putting Wagner on the cusp of victory.
Battaglia then closed the door with a perfect bottom of the 10th in closing out the Seahawks' 9-6 win.
Keel led 11-hit Green & White attack, going 3-for-5 with a career-best three hits, five RBI and two stolen bases. Miller also recorded three hits, finishing 3-for-6 with a double and a stolen base.
The Mountaineers, which notched 11 hits, were led by Foster, Knight and Quaranta.
Battaglia hurled 2.0 shutout innings of one-hit ball in moving to 1-0 after senior RHP
Ryan Van Spronsen (Brantford, Ontario / Assumption College) struck out one over 8.0 innings of work. In picking up the no-decision, the Canadian native went at least 8.0 innings for the fifth-straight start.
MSM LHP Dan Horner (1-3) assumed the loss, allowing three runs over 1.0 inning of work.
