Bridgeport, CT -
Sacred Heart dealt Wagner a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat in the second game of a doubleheader at Harbor Yard with an extra-inning victory at Harbor Yard.

The loss spoiled an outstanding performance by fifth-year senior RHP Dale Hering (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) in his final collegiate start. Hering struck out two while allowing three unearned runs on five hits over 7.0 solid innings.

Wagner struck for the game's first runs in the top of the third inning. With one out, senior Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) drew a walk before moving to second on a Tommy Higgins (Jr., Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) single up the middle. After a groundout moved the pair to second-and-third, freshman Cliff Brantley (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond) loaded up the bases with a walk. Junior Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame) followed with this single through the left side, plating Boyd and Higgins while staking the Seahawks to a 2-0 lead.

Bolstered by his offense, Hering went out and retired nine of the next 10 batters he faced - including six-straight over the fourth and fifth innings.

The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning with an unearned run. Dave Boisture led off with a single before advancing to second when Higgins' throw pulled freshman Dave Pepe (Caldwell, NJ / James Caldwell) off the bag. After Steve Tedesco loaded the bases up with a walk, Hering buckled down and induced a 4-6-3 double play while conceding Boisture's unearned tally. The fifth-year senior then struck out Rob Griffith, the NEC's leader in RBI, on three pitches for the final out of the frame.

Wagner got that run back in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Ian Vazquez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) singled with one out before stealing second. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, senior Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) smoked a single to right field, plating Vazquez while giving the Seahawks a 3-1 lead.

Sacred Heart tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of unearned runs while sending the game to extras. The Pioneers almost won it in regulation on Tedesco's game-tying single as the ball was headed to the outfield, but Vazquez kept the ball in the infield with a sprawling dive.

In the top of the eighth inning, reliever LHP Matt Fitton retired the Green & White in order.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Hunter Phillips singled with one out before scoring the game-winning run one play later on a Chris Perez run-scoring double as Phillips just beat the throw from senior Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms).

Fitton (2-2) earned the win, striking out one over a perfect frame. Sophomore RHP Dakota Dvorak (Pompano Beach, FL / North Broward Prep) was saddled with the loss, giving up one run in 0.2 innings of work in falling to 0-3 on the year.

Wagner falls to 18-32 and 12-19 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while Sacred Heart improves to 30-21 and 22-9 in the league.

The Pioneers, which outhit the Seahawks 8-4, were led by Phillips, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and a walk.

The teams will conclude the series with a single nine-inning game that is now set to begin at 11:00 am.
