Staten Island, NY - Bryant plated one run in the top of the fifth inning and made it hold up in an 1-0 victory over Wagner in the first game of a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Seahawks are now 9-18 and 7-7 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Bulldogs improves to 12-14 and 4-6 in the league.
The game was a pitcher's dual in the early going with neither offense able to do much damage.
Bryant posted the first threat of the day in the top of the third inning when Dan Muscatello and David Soltis each singled with one out. However, senior RHP
Dale Hering (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) induced a fly out
before striking out Jamie Skagerlind with this offering.
Wagner countered in each of the next two frames, placing runners at first-and-second on walks but was unable to convert each time as Bulldogs RHP Salvatore Lisanti evaded both threats.
Bryant finally broke through in the top of the fifth with what would end up being the game's only run. Dan Muscatello doubled to right field with one out before moving to third on a wild pitch. Then on a full count, Dave Soltis collected his third hit of the game with a RBI double to left field, plating Muscatello. The Bulldogs had an opportunity to add to the lead but were denied when Hering struck out Mike Delponte
with this nasty pitch before coaxing an inning-ending fly out.
The Seahawks would threaten in the bottom part of the fifth inning as freshman
Ian Miller (Downington, PA / Bishop Shanahan)
recorded this one-out single but would be stranded at first.
After leaving a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Green & White appeared poised to tie the game up in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Junior
Hayden Hunter (Santa Monica, CA / Notre Dame)
delivered this single with one out. Pinch runner freshman
Ian Vazquez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA) t
hen swiped second, just beating the throw. After advancing Vazquez moved to third on a pop out, junior
Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen)) crushed a ball down the left field line that just went foul. After battling to 3-2, Bryant reliever LHP Mark Andrews induced a hard hit out to left field, stranding Vazquez 90 feet from home while giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 win.
Hering (3-3) was the tough-luck loser in seeing his three-game winning streak end. He went the distance for the second-straight game, striking out four while yielding just one run on eight hits and a pair of walks over 7.0 innings.
Lisanti (2-2) earned the win, surrendering just two hits and four walks over 5.0 innings while Andrews collected his sixth save of the year, striking out two over 2.0 innings of one-hit ball.
