Staten Island, NY - Senior
Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) fueled a six-run sixth inning with his 200th career hit, a bloop double to left field, as Wagner posted a 10-3 come-from-behind victory over Iona in non-conference action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
Boyd also added another double in the bottom of the eighth inning and is now tied with
Nick Papa and
Chris Dick for sixth place on the all-time hits list with 201. Former teammate
Damian Csakai holds the record with 235.
With their third-straight victory, the Seahawks improve to 14-26 while the Gaels fall to 13-25.
Senior RHP
Dale Hering (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) yielded just two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts over 6.0 innings in improving to 4-5 on the year. Hering has now gone at least six innings in each of his last five starts and leads the team with 41 strikeouts over 55.1 innings of work.
Iona took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Nick Rossetti belted a solo home run to right field with one out.
The Gaels added to the lead with a single tally in the top of the third inning on a Rossetti RBI double. Iona had a chance to further pad its lead but Hering left the bases loaded when he forced Michael Chiaravalloti into an inning-ending out.
Iona continued to threaten, leading off the fourth and sixth innings with back-to-back singles only to have Hering eradicate those threats with some solid pitching to go along with some outstanding defense. The tall righthander fanned Chris Griffin in the top of the fourth inning before sophomore
Gaby Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) threw out Matthew Kriss at third base for the second out. Hering then induced a lazy fly to for the third out. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kriss failed to advance the runners when he bunted the ball back to Hering, who got the lead runner at third before inducing an inning-ending double play.
Wagner assumed command of the game with a six-run sixth inning. Boyd led off with the aforementioned double before junior
Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen)) was plunked. Junior
Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) bunted the pair over to second-and-third before senior
Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) drew a walk.
Reigning
Akadema Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week
Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) followed with a two-run single through the right side, plating Boyd and Brown while moving McDonnell to third. On the play, Lucas was thrown out at second for the second out. The Seahawks then went ahead on the next play when McDonnell scored on a throwing error by the shortstop that also allowed sophomore
Nick Alfano (Coral Springs, FL / North Broward Prep) to move to second. Ramirez greeted reliever RHP Stephen Bianchi with a RBI double to right field, extending the lead out to 4-2. Freshman
Ian Vazquez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) pushed the lead to 5-2 with a run-scoring single before scoring on a passed ball while capping the six-run frame that saw 11 batters come to the plate.
The Gaels got one of those runs back in the top of the eighth inning on a James Beck RBI ground out.
Wagner put the game away with four runs in the bottom part of the frame. Vazquez plated Alfano and Miller with a one-out single up the middle before scoring on Boyd's second double of the game. Brown capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly that plated Boyd while providing the final 10-3 score.
