Staten Island, NY -
Central Connecticut State jumped out to an 8-1 lead after six innings en route to a 10-5 win over Wagner in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Seahawks committed five errors and are now 5-14 and 4-4 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Blue Devils improve to 7-8-1 and 5-3 in the league.

The teams split their four game series with each team winning twice.

Junior RHP Ryan Van Spronsen (Brantford, Ontario / Assumption College) was on his game in the early going, setting down the side in order in each of the first two frames.

The Green & White then took its only lead of the day in the bottom of the second inning. Jon Lucas (Sr., Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) led off with a walk before going to second on a Tommy Higgins (Jr., Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) single. The pair advanced to second-and-third on a perfect sacrifice bunt by senior Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell). Sophomore Gaby Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) then chased home Lucas with a run-scoring ground out.

CCSU rallied for a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning.

The visitors added to the lead with four runs on just two hits in the top of the fourth inning while assuming a 6-1 lead.

The Blue Devils pushed the lead out to 8-1 with a pair of tallies in each of the fifth and sixth innings.

Wagner threatened to make some noice in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading up the bases with just one out only to see Conforti line into an inning-ending double play.

The Seahawks cut the deficit to 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. WIth the bases loaded and one out, senior Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) drew a walk before classmate Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) contributed with a sacrifice fly.

Rice trimmed the deficit to 8-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning with a RBI single, plating Conforti.

However, CCSU answered with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning, extending the lead out to 10-4.

Conforti provided the final 10-5 score when his RBI single scored McDonnell.

Higgins went 3-for-5 while Rice and freshman Ian Vazquez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) each notched two hits, leading the way for the Green & White.

Van Spronsen (0-2) was the tough-luck loser, surrendering six runs (three earned) on just three hits while striking out five.

Pat Epps went 3-for-4 while Matuszak recorded a pair of hits, pacing the Blue Devils.

CCSU starter RHP Tom Coughlin (1-1) earned the win, allowing one run over 6.0 innings.

Wagner returns to action on Wednesday, March 30 at Rutgers with first pitch slated for 3:00 pm.
