Wagner Wins Game One 8-5 Over The Mount

BOX SCORE

Staten Island, NY -
Wagner scored four runs over the first two frames and never looked back en route to a wire-to-wire 8-5 win over Mount St. Mary's in the first game of a doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 3-10 and 2-0 in the NEC while the Mountaineers fall to 5-8 and 0-2 in the league.

Three different members of the Green & White recorded multiple hits while eight hit safely as Wagner outhit the Mount 11-6.

After senior RHP Dale Hering (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) recorded a 1-2-3 first inning - highlighted by this strikeout of Tommy Flynn and this one on Michael Foster - the Seahawks got on the board with two run in the bottom part of the frame.

Junior Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's (Metuchen)) started things off when he was hit by a pitch before senior Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) traded places with Brown on a fielder's choice. Classmate Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) followed with a single through the left side, moving Boyd to second. Senior Jon Lucas (Hackettstown, NJ / Hackettstown) then opened the scoring with this RBI single to left field, plating Boyd while advancing McDonnell to second. Following an out, junior Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) picked up the two-out RBI, plating McDonnell with this sharp single up the middle.

Wagner added to the lead with two more runs in the second inning. Senior Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) worked a lead-off walk before moving to third on a double down the right field line off the bat of freshman Ian Vazquez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)). Brown made it 3-0 with this RBI ground out, plating Rice before Boyd extended the lead to 4-0 with a one-out single through the left side against a drawn-in infield.

Mount St. Mary's dented the scoreboard with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning in part to a pair of Green & White miscues.

The Seahawks responded with three runs in the bottom part of the frame while knocking out Mountaineer starter RHP Brett Moore. Ramirez led off with a single before moving to third on a Rice single as the later moved to second on the throw. Vazquez plated Ramirez with a RBI ground out before Brown singled off the pitcher, scoring Ramirez. Later in the inning with two outs and Brown at second, McDonnell reached on an infield single as Brown scored all the way from second in giving the Seahawks an insurmountable 7-2 lead.

Down but not out, Mount St. Mary's responded with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning while chasing Hering form the game. With the score standing 7-5 and and Shane Eyler at second with one out, sophomore RHP Dakota Dvorak  (Pompano Beach, FL / North Broward Prep) entered and quelled the threat by retiring the next two batters.

Dvorak kept it up in the top of the sixth inning, retiring the side in order while keeping the Mountaineers at bay. In the bottom part of the frame the Green & White added to the lead with an insurance run. Brown led off with a double before moving to third on a Boyd single and scored on a McDonnell sacrifice fly while pushing the lead out to 8-5.

Senior David Rees (Staten Island, NY / Xavier) entered in the seventh and set the side down in order – punctuated with this game-ending strikeout – for his first save of the year after winning game one yesterday.

Hering (1-2) got the win, striking out three while yielding five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings of work. After the fifth-year senior exited the duo of Dvorak and Rees retired the final eight batters they faced.

Brown, Boyd and McDonnell each recorded two hits en route to going a combined 6-for-10 with five RBI and four runs.

Andrew Caron led the way for the Mount, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Moore (0-2) assumed the loss, yielding seven runs over 3.1 innings.
