Vazquez's Suicide Squeeze Gives Wagner 9-8 Walk-off Win Over Mount

Freshman Ian Vazquez
BOX SCORE

Staten Island, NY -
Freshman Ian Vazquez's (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) successful suicide squeeze bunt plated sophomore Gaby Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) in the bottom of the 10th inning while lifting Wagner to a thrilling 9-8 victory over Mount St. Mary's in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener for both teams at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

The Seahawks (2-10) recorded a season-high nine runs after scoring just nine over the previous six games combined on a season-best matching 15 hits. Leading the onslaught was the trio of Vazquez, freshman Ian Miller (Downington, PA / Bishop Shanahan) and junior Tommy Higgins (Port Monmouth, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) - all of whom recorded at least three. Senior Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) also recorded a pair of base knocks, giving him a team-best five multi-hit games on the year.

The Mountaineers (5-7) outhit the Green & White by a 16-15 count but but stranded nine runners - including failing to score on two bases loaded situations - one of which occured with one out and the other with no outs.

Mount St. Mary's opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first on a Sam Nott RBI fielder's choice. Wagner got that run back in the bottom part of the frame when senior Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) doubled home Miller, who opened the inning with a double. Higgins gave the Seahawks the lead in the bottom of the second, when he scored on a double-play after opening the frame with a double.

The Mountaineers assumed a 4-2 lead in the top of the third with three runs. As would be the theme of the game, Wagner rallied to tie the game up with single tallies in each of the third and fourth innings.

Mount St. Mary's then opened up a 7-4 lead in the sixth inning with three runs while chasing junior RHP Mark Holmes (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) from the game.

Down but not out, Wagner struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Vazquez roped this single through the left side. After advancing to second on a failed pick-off, Miller brought him around on this single right back up the middle. Miller then stole second, before scoring on this Boyd single while getting to within one at 7-6.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Mountaineers loaded up the bases with no outs and appeared poised to put the game out of reach. However, senior LHP David Rees (Staten Island, NY / Xavier) doused that fire with just four pitches. The reigning Second Team All-NEC relief pitcher struck out Andrew Caron on three-straight pitches before coaxing a weak fly ball to McDonnell for the second out. On the play, Brandon Scott tried to tag up and score but was gunned out at the plate on a strike from McDonnell.

The Seahawks tied the game up in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single run. Senior Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) got things started with this one-out single to right field. Higgins then brought him around on this double to right center while tying the game up at 7-7.

After both teams failed to score in the ninth, Mount St. Mary's jumped ahead in the 10th on a Tommy Flynn RBI single up the middle. Wagner then overcame a Mountaineer deficit for the fourth time of the day in the bottom part of the frame with two runs. Conforti led off the inning by getting plunked before moving to third on a ground out. On the play, Conforti was in motion and never stopped running, easily beating the throw to third following the out at first. Ramirez tied the game up with a RBI single to left field before moving to third on senior Jack Rice's (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) single through the right side.

That set the table for Vazquez's game-winning bunt on a 0-1 pitch while scoring Ramirez and setting off a jubilant celebration and snapping an eight-game losing streak at the same time.

Rees (1-0) earned the win, striking out one while yielding one run over 3.0 innings of work. Mount St. Mary's LHP Karl Lamont (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over 1.0 inning.
