Staten Island, NY - Winthrop defeated Wagner 9-2 in the second game of the in the Johnny Gill Memorial Tournament at the Winthrop Ballpark. Down five runs in the game's early going the, Green & White cut the deficit to three in the top of the seventh inning only to see the Eagles plate four over their last two trips to the plate.
Winthrop junior Tyler Mizenko was the story of the game in improving to 1-0 on the year. The right-handed pitcher struck out six while yielding just a first-inning single over 6.0 scoreless frames.
For the second-straight game, Wagner allowed the opposition to put up a crooked number in the first inning as the Eagles scored three runs on Chas Crane's RBI single and Eddie Rohan's two-run double.
The Seahawks had their first chance to dent the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. With one out, freshman
Ian Vazquez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) reached on an error before stealing second. After moving over to third on a ground out, the first-year shortstop was stranded 90 feet from home.
Winthrop added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, extending its lead out to 5-0.
Mizenko, meanwhile, was unhittable retiring 17 of the last 18 batters he faced, including 11 straight before exiting after the sixth inning.
Wagner finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning against reliever Justin Hopper. Senior
Seth Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) led off with a single to right center before moving over to second on classmate
Joe Conforti's (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) single up the middle on a perfectly executed hit-and-run. Senior
Kevin McDonnell's (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) moved the pair into second-and-third on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt up the third base line. Following an out, the duo came around to score on
Gaby Ramirez's (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Perkiomen (PA)) single through the left side, cutting the lead to 5-2.
Winthrop got one of those runs back in the bottom part of the frame before adding three more in the bottom of the eighth while providing the final 9-2 score.
Senior RHP
Dale Hering (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) took the loss, yielding five runs (four earned) on six hits over 6.0 solid innings while striking out three. Classmate LHP
Jack Rice (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) came on in relief of Hering and was tagged for four unearned runs over 2.0 innings.
The Seahawks were outhit 9-5 and paced by Boyd, junior
Eddie Brown (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph's Metuchen), Conforti, freshman
Ian Miller (Downington, PA / Bishop Shanahan) and Ramirez as each player notched one hit.
Rohan led three multi-hit performers for the Eagles 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
The teams will play again tomorrow beginning at 3:45 pm.
